Art Inspiration

Composer Julia Wolfe, pictured above, was in the market for scissors to be wielded by the women of the chorus in her new oratorio, “Fire in my mouth.” The work, which premiered on Thursday, January 24th, by the New York Philharmonic, explores the Triangle shirtwaist factory fire of 1911, which killed 146 garment workers, mostly immigrant women, including many who were trapped by locked exit doors. Their deaths helped change the way New York and the nation thought about safety, the labor movement and the struggle for women’s equality.

To read more about Julia's vision and to see and listen to "snippets" of the scissors put ot musical use, be sure to read the New York Times article, "Arming a Chorus of Women with Scissors" linked to below.

Aurifil is Plastic Neutral

Last week, Aurifil announced that they have implemented a program to make Aurifil Plastic Neutral in 2019 by offsetting their average yearly plastic production rate of 8000kg. This means that Aurifil's involvement will support the collection and clearing of 8000kg of plastic from our oceans in areas of Haiti, Indonesia, The Philippines, and Brazil.

This is a fantastic step forward and I am pleased that Aurifil is taking steps to establish new standards for sustainability in the quilting and textile industry.

Personally, I recycle my spools when they are empty. I have also seen great tips like using the spools to wind binding, and I will be sharing how my husband and I are upcycling the large spool plastic containers soon!

First 25 Splendid Sampler 2 Blocks

When Pat Sloan and Jane Davidson asked me to contribute to their book Splendid Sampler 2, I was honored and excited to design a 6" finished block. I wasn't sure about sewing along, but I committed to a fabric grouping that I love and I have really been enjoying adding a block or two to my growing collection each week.

Now that I have 25 blocks pieced, I am really happy with how all my blocks are looking together! And I’m pretty darn pleased I’m still sewing a block or two a week. I am hoping I can get about 40 blocks pieced by the end of the sew along  (which wraps up in April). Just keep sewing, right??

I am envisioning finishing the blocks out to make a special lap quilt for myself. Have you ever committed to a longer term sew along? I was the most hesitant about the 6" finished size of these blocks, but they are coming together beautifully, if I do say so myself.

Oliso Smart Irons

I have owned and used an Oliso smart iron for almost 3 years. It took a little bit of time to get used to leaving my iron "down" and letting the feet raise it when I let go of the handle, but I love how stable the iron is and I haven't dropped it once (which I can't say for the iron that I had to replace with the Oliso... oops!).

Due to having extremely hard water, I have personally opted to use a dry iron and have a water spritz option if I need it.

Vermont Quilt Festival

I am excited to announce that I will be teaching at the Vermont Quilt Festival just outside of Burlington, Vermont, in June! Registration for the Festival opens in March, so be sure to keep an eye on the website for more details.

I will be teaching 2 full day project workshops (Triangle Transparency and Wayward Transparency) and 2 half day workshops. I am especially excited to get to the northeast for the first time in many years.

*Registration opens in March!

In Closing...

I have had a very busy beginning of the year. I am currently putting the finishing touches on my 2019 Patreon Quilt Pattern and I am really excited to get to unveil the quilt and give the pattern to my Quilting Jetgirl Patrons in just a few more days!

With the addition of the Vermont Quilt Festival to my teaching schedule, I am also looking forward to traveling and getting more time more interacting with quilters in person this year.
