DrPH Student Academic Review
 
The Academic Review is designed to assist doctoral students to stay on track with advising and other supportive activities to help facilitate the completion of doctoral work in a timely manner. Students will be asked to describe informally, where they are in the educational process and if there are any issues that could present a potential barrier to advancement. The review is to help us provide you with resources and assistance you may require. 

The Academic Review Sessions will be held every 15 minutes on the dates & times listed:

Congratulations Monique!

The Center for Race and Gender (CRG) recently announced the latest additions to their Fall 2018 Student Research Grantee cohort. The UC Berkeley DrPH Program would like to congratulate Monique Hosein (left) for her recognition in the school's Center for Race and Gender CRG. Monique's Dissertation project will explore how Black women experience policing in the Bay Area.

 ESPM174 GSI | Design and Analysis of Ecological Research
 
Course Description: Surveys major designs and analyses for biological field and laboratory studies. Topics include data distributions; regression; analysis of variance; fixed and random effects; blocking, split plots, and repeated measures; maximum likelihood; Generalized Linear Models; basic computer programming. Relies on math to interpret and manipulate equations supported by computer simulations. Examples include population, ecosystem, behavioral, and evolutionary ecology.

Course Description:

The class will meet three times a week for lectures, case-based discussions, and small group sessions led by graduate student instructors. Students will take two examinations. This multidisciplinary upper-division course addresses diverse issues in global health, including health disparities, social and political factors, biomedical and technological challenges, and economic and legal perspectives. | z
GSI Duties:
  • Attend orientation meetings
  • Attend class
  • Lead discussion sections
  • Hold weekly office hours
  • Address students' email questions
  • Pickup and delivery of A-V equipment as needed
  • Write quizzes / exams
  • Grade quizzes/exams and assignments
  • Maintain the course web site on bCourses

Occupational Health Internship Program (OHIP)
 
Teams of two students are placed with labor unions or community-based organizations to work on projects that investigate job-related health and safety issues among workers, often of new immigrant groups, employed in an under-served or a high hazard job. Students can apply to work in any of the following cities:  San Francisco Bay Area, Los Angeles, Chicago, Boston, New Orleans, New York City, and several new sites Hartford (CT), Cincinnati (OH), Las Vegas (NV) and Paducah (KY). Wyoming. Supervision and mentorship are provided by senior occupational health researchers and their host organizations.
 
The program is open both to undergraduates (3rd and 4th year) and graduate students with an interest in occupational health or related fields. A stipend is provided for the 9-week experience ($4,000 for undergraduates, $5,200 for graduates). Housing allowance is not provided but we can assist those relocating for the summer to find temporary housing.

Prizes at Program at UC Berkeley Announces Competitions


The Prizes Program at UC Berkeley is an important forum for rewarding creative expression and scholarly achievement by Berkeley’s finest students. Winners receive both recognition and a cash prize, coordinated with the winner’s fin. aid package. 

Deadlines for most contests are now through March. See the Prizes and Honors website for details about each prize, specific deadlines, and how to submit entries.
 
 


Stanford CERC Design Fellowship
 
Stanford’s Clinical Excellence Research Center (CERC) is the first university-based research center dedicated to discovering and testing cost-saving innovations in clinically excellent care. Our 1-year fellowship program, now in its eighth year, trains tomorrow’s leaders on the fundamentals of healthcare value improvement. Fellows also acquire valuable skills in research manuscript preparation, public speaking, scalability analysis and grant-writing. We seek outstanding fellowship and post-doctoral fellows in other disciplines for the fellowship year starting in August 2019. Applicants must include a CV and a cover letter explaining their interest.
 
 
Admissions are on a rolling basis; candidates are encouraged to apply ASAP.

Haas Institute Summer Fellowship

The Haas Institute Summer Fellowship is a three-month-long, part-time, 20hr/week paid internship—compensation is awarded based on educational degree. The fellowship runs from mid-May to mid-August, and takes place at the Haas Institute office on the UC Berkeley campus, where all summer fellows are expected to work from. All traditional, non-traditional, and international students who are studying in the US (with valid work permits) from community colleges through doctoral degree programs are welcome to apply. All accepted applicants must arrange and cover the expenses of their travel and housing accommodations.

Summer fellows will be paired with a lead researcher at the Haas Institute to work on specific projects and assignments related to the Haas Institute's wide range of programs and projects. Fellows will be expected to conduct online, and at times in-the-field, research to produce policy-oriented work on short deadlines. The concerns of disadvantaged and marginalized groups and racial and social justice issues are situated at the center of this research.

$10,000 | R. Lindheim Award


The School of Public Health is now accepting applications for the 2019-20 Roselyn Lindheim Award in Environmental Design and Public Health. Awards will consist of stipends up to $10,000 for one or two continuing graduate students.
 
To apply, current graduate students at UC Berkeley must:

  • Submit two letters of recommendation (at least one written by UCB faculty)
    • directly from the author and emailed to sphaward@berkeley.edu. 
    • “LINDHEIM RECOMMENDATION – [APPLICANT’S FULL NAME]”.
  • Submit a statement of no more than 5 double-spaced pages (1-inch margins, 12 pt font) and includes references, figures, etc. that describes the work-in-progress. Be sure to read Environments, People, and Health by Professor Roselyn Lindheim.

$2,000 | SF/Bay-Area Schweitzer Fellowship

 
The Bay Area Schweitzer Fellows Program is now recruiting applicants for the 2019-20 year.  This Fellowship is designed for students who want to create opportunities for health-related service within their communities.  An information session will be held at noon on Tuesday, October 30 in Room 590G University Hall.

$2,600 | C. Pies Award in Life Course Theory


Established by UCB DrPH Students, this award honors Dr. Cheri Pies and aims to support graduate students applying Life Course Theory to their Residency.
To apply, current graduate students at UC Berkeley must:

  • Submit a 2-page proposal that includes:
    • How the Life Course Theory informs your work and how you think about public health. (500 words)
    • A description of your planned project or research including the timeline, partners, academic mentors, and key outcomes.
    • Barriers you anticipate and how you plan to overcome them.
    • How your work will increase our understanding of Life Course Theory.
    • Future professional goals and how they relate to Life Course Theory

$1,500 | Public Health Alumni Assoc. Scholarship Competition


To be eligible for this opportunity, currently enrolled graduate students must be (1) in good academic standing, (2) have completed at least one semester in the program, (3) have at least two additional semesters to complete, and (4) registered in a minimum of 12 units in Fall 2019. Online MPH students, May and December 2019 graduates and those on, or planning to be on, filing fee are not eligible for this opportunity. Recipients are selected on the following criteria: (1) scholarship, (2) professional potential, and (3) commitment to public health.
 
Note: A few of the scholarships being awarded have special preferences for students studying social epidemiology, biostatistics, maternal and child health, public health nutrition, epidemiology, and for joint medical program students. If any of the above criteria apply to you, please incorporate that into your application. Students must:

  • Submit responses to the following two essay questions (500 words per essay):
    • What experiences influenced your decision to enter the field of public health rather than, or in addition to, a career in other health sciences?

CERCH Works in Progress Seminar (WIPS)


Please join us for an exciting installment of our CERCH Works in Progress Seminar (WIPS) on January 29 at 3:30pm in the CERCH Conference Room (in the Golden Bear Building, Suite 265). Dr. Manolis Kogevinas of the Barcelona Institute for Global Health (ISGlobal) will present on: "Light at night, sleep and health: why circadian rhythms matter".
  • Abstract: Circadian: Potential health effects of light at night and mistimed lifestyle practices in the general population have been poorly examined. I will present new epidemiological evidence on the effects of circadian disruption and light-at-night in workers and in the general population, and on mechanisms of disease and preventive measures.
  • Bio: Manolis Kogevinas is a senior researcher at the Barcelona Institute for Global Health and is currently on sabbatical at the School of Public Health, UW. His research focuses on environmental, occupational and genetic factors in relation to cancer, respiratory diseases and child health. He has published more than 600 scientific papers. He was president of the ISEE in 2017.

UCB Center for Public Health & Leadership Toolkit (CPHPL):
  • We has developed the Center for Public Health Practice & Leadership (CPHPL) Toolkit, a practical “go-to” resource, which includes proven leadership tools and knowledge that can be applied to enhance effectiveness in your school projects, jobs, and overall career development. The tools provided are in areas of leadership that public health employers, alumni, and students identify as essential for success.
  • The topics and skill areas within this toolkit are listed below and are based upon the CPHPL leadership competencies. Within each topic area, you will find articles, templates, tip sheets, frameworks, podcasts, and additional resources for you to utilize in your jobs.

Science Leadership and Management (SLAM):
  • This is a seminar series focused on understanding the many interpersonal interactions critical for success in a scientific lab, as well as some practical aspects of lab management.  The target audience for this course is upper-level science graduate students with broad interests and backgrounds, and the skills discussed will be applicable to a variety of career paths. Postdocs are also welcome to attend.
  • SLAM is sponsored by the Institute of Quantitative Biosciences and The Center for Visiting Scholars and Post-Doc Affairs, with additional support from the Department of Chemistry and the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory's Chemical Sciences Division.

Social Justice Symposium

Each year, graduate students in the UC Berkeley School of Social Welfare organize this community-oriented event to encourage knowledge-sharing through workshops, activities, and a keynote speaker, all focused on social justice. The event is FREE and open to the public, and lunch is provided for attendees. The event will be held Saturday, January 26, 2019 from 9:00 am to 2:30 pm at Martin Luther King Jr. Middle School (1781 Rose St, Berkeley)

Me Too in Medicine

This event brings together UCSF health professionals to share anonymous stories (read aloud by trained volunteers) related to gender disparities. Topics will range from gender dynamics to sexual harassment. Stories will be related to training and working in health care, e.g. experiences that occurred in the classroom, on campus, between colleagues, during clinical encounters, etc... All genders are welcome!
