Drs. Steven Abramson, Michael Locurcio, Ruth Crowe, and Michael Poles
Educator Spotlight:
Ruth Crowe, MD, PhD
Department of Medicine
In this edition of the Educator Spotlight, Michael Poles, MD, PhD interviews Ruth Crowe, MD, PhD, associate professor in the Department of Medicine, Director of Integrated Clinical Skills, and Director of Practice of Medicine Module and Content. Dr. Crowe was awarded the 2018 Educator Community Award for Excellence in Educational Innovation.

What factors led you to a career as a physician?
I don’t remember ever not wanting to be a physician. From an early age, I was interested in how things work. Biology is magnificent. Behavior is fascinating. Caring gives meaning.

What has been your path to a career in medical education?
Pure serendipity. A teaching opportunity sparked an interest in learning about learning and how medical education is changing. I paid a lot of attention to my children’s education and that turned out to be applicable.

You are known as an amazing innovator in medical education. What are some of the most fun and innovative projects you have worked on?
The intellectual challenge of innovation is powerful. However, the true reward of innovation is collaboration. Fun is the people you work with. It has been great fun to collaborate with each Clerkship Director and their teams to produce OSCEs for learners to demonstrate growth in core clinical skills as well as competency in skills that are unique to each clerkship. I feel
enormous privilege to work with smart, accomplished, dedicated colleagues, to share perspectives, and learn from them. The work itself is different, challenging, and rewarding.

What makes you truly enjoy your role as a medical educator?
In addition to the rewards of collaboration, enjoyment comes with designing potential innovations and testing hypotheses. Data and feedback informs the analysis of outcomes so that we may refine hypotheses, optimize interventions, and be able to move on to other goals. Learning throughout the process is fun.

What does your future in medical education look like?
That’s a good question. Over the years, I have been carefully listening, observing, testing and analyzing within the medical education environment, aiming to amass expertise about the longitudinal path of a medical student learner. I hope to continue to be thoughtful and creative about providing the best value in medical education and to support others on the path towards mastery in learning and education.

What advice would you give to our rising educators?
Find good mentors who appreciate and support you. Be patient. Don’t be afraid to make mistakes; learn from them.

Can you provide us a fun fact about yourself?
I knit tea cozies.

We welcome your input and suggestions. Feel free to email us directly with questions and for more information at: michael.poles@nyumc.org and crystal.mainiero@nyumc.org.

Program for Medical Education
Innovations and Research
Request for Grant Proposals
The Program for Medical Education Innovations and Research (PrMEIR) Innovation Grants Program expands the capacity of the NYU School of Medicine to do cutting edge medical education research by providing seed grants and support to an ever enlarging and vibrant community. Over 55 projects have been funded, many of which have led to merit-based external funding and publications in peer-reviewed journals.

The 2019 call for proposals is now open. The theme for this year's PrMEIR innovation grant is Improving Health Outcomes: Feedback for Individuals, Teams, or Health Systems. Grants will focus on creating innovative feedback systems to prepare learners and health systems for success in this rapidly changing environment. These programs may address any of the many issues learners, teams and systems face when trying to provide high value transformative care although we believe that the development of clinical competencies and the enactment of professional values, actions and aspirations are the foundation of all of medical education.

Applicants for the PrMEIR grant should focus on initiatives that include but are not limited to:
  • Designing programs to better standardize competencies and learning outcomes
  • Providing training and feedback for enhancing system transformation
  • Delivering feedback focused on self-directed learning and/or for adaptive expertise
  • Assessing learners’ development of values and action-oriented behaviors
  • Implementing effective cycles of formative (just in time, workplace-based, point-of-care) feedback
  • Enhancing feedback to individuals, teams and systems
Please submit a Letter of Intent (LOI) of no more than 1,000 words by March 1, 2019 via REDCap at: http://j.mp/2UWwRHF. Additional details about the grant and submission details can be found here.
Sixth Annual
Medical Education Subway Summit
Call for Abstracts
The Sixth Annual Medical Education Subway Summit provides a collegial inter-institutional venue for faculty, house staff, and medical students across New York City to share their innovations and scholarship in medical education and to engage in substantive dialogue. It is hoped that this local sharing of educational peer-reviewed scholarly works will lead to enhanced educational practice among our community participants.

This year submissions should address a current topic in medical education, as opposed to basic science, translational, or clinical research. The call is open to faculty, residents, medical students, and administrators from any of the 8 co-sponsor institutions. Collaborative efforts between two or more schools are especially welcomed!

Introduction to
Augmented and Virtual Reality
in Medical Education
The next Introduction to Virtual Reality (VR) and Augmented Reality (AR) in Medical Education workshop is scheduled for Wednesday, April 24, 2019, 11:00AM-1:30PM & Thursday, May 9, 2019, 11:00AM-12:30PM. This course demonstrates methods to adapt what these technologies do well for medical education. Through VR and AR, users can participate in clinically relevant simulations, tap into previously inaccessible locations and experiences, deliver appropriate resources to a situation or location, and encourage active, experiential learning. Facilitated by Greg Dorsainville, MPS, from the Institute for Innovations in Medical Education, this session covers the following objectives:
  • Identify current AR and VR technology trends;
  • Manipulate several AR and VR devices and applications;
  • Navigate through a virtual world;
  • Outline techniques to manipulate interfaces in VR;
  • Evaluate the best uses for the technology in practice;
  • Guide learners in a mixed reality experience;
  • Design appropriate learning experiences in AR and VR;
  • Understand the development pipeline for AR and VR;
  • Create content for AR and VR.
