Market-based housing policy is increasingly in the spotlight, but it won’t solve the housing crisis. Join Urban Habitat, the East Bay Community Law Center, and grassroots groups from around the region to learn about community-based solutions that can make the Bay Area more equitable and result in prosperity for all!

Urban Habitat and the East Bay Community Law Center recently released a new report, Rooted in Home: Community-Based Alternatives to the Housing Crisis, which highlights under-utilized solutions to the housing crisis—rooted in permanent affordability and democratic community control. Rather than advocate for false solutions that rely on the private housing market, we put forward models and strategies that hold land in community ownership and prioritize long-term shelter over profit. Local, regional, and state level government has an essential role to play in providing housing security for all people, but proposals from the CASA Compact, the legislature, and the Governor have not incorporated alternative solutions that will better meet the needs of the most impacted communities.

We invite our allies, the media, government staff, and funders to hear from local community groups working to house low-income people and people of color—who have experienced consecutive waves of housing crises—and built lasting solutions in the process. We will host a moderated panel to amplify the voices and accomplishments of Serve the People San Jose, The Village, and others. Panelists will discuss the importance and potential of public land, community land trusts, and permanently affordable housing structures. The event is free, but please register here, so we can provide coffee and light refreshments.
