PREZ's NOTES

The new year has started, we had a great speaker and the Kitty Pins were a hit.  I do hope that
everyone will be participating in the FASA Fashion show.  Do forget to buy your raffle tickets for
the event because money raised goes towards scholarships.

Let give Anita Centero a huge THANKS for the Annual show, she did a fabulous job putting everything together and getting everything taken down as well.

We have a nominating committee, they will be needed to fill board positions, so if you get a call
from one of them, please be kind.  Listen, to their proposition for the position and make the
decision to become a board member.  Remember all of our positions are non-paid, volunteer only, so
if you have an opinion on how you want to see thing run, be a part of the board.

I have been working with my kids for our upcoming fashion show and I do hope that you all will be
able to attend this on February 16th at the Garden Center.  They have been working very hard to
make their garments and some are making their own line of things.  You can purchase your ticket
online through the website www.marisoldelunafoundation.org.

Thanks for all of your support, I believe that our board is the most awesome group of people, they
are so wonderful and helpful.  If you see them, let them know what a great job they are doing.
Thanks for letting me be, me.

When good things come to an end…

December 26th, 2019 was the finish to a great Exhibition!  I just want to take a moment to summarize this great event and opportunity for FASA.

Here’s a synopsis of the comments received in the Guestbook:

In one word – “Fab”, “Amazing”, “Awesome”, “Beautiful”, “Outstanding”, “Inspiring”, “Love”, “Fabulous”!
Other comments – “Very special”, “I came for FASA and enjoyed learning about SAY Si.  I feel very encouraged.  I’m an artist and this is a wonderful place for young people!” “Fabulous show” “Worth the trip” and “Thanks for great show & gallery.”

Of course yet another successful FASA Annual Exhibition would NOT have occurred first without the great art submitted by FASA artists, fiber artists throughout Texas, and few others around the country.

Second, the creative vision of our juror Alana J. Coates and her ability to create an exhibit that represented a diversity of ideas and techniques, and levels of artistic experience.  And next but not least, all of the terrific FASA volunteers from marketing ambassadors passing out postcards/flyers, installation of art in the gallery, opening reception hostesses (albeit terrible weather), and then the final take-down.

hanks to you ALL!  Your contribution is just as meaningful because you helped to create the opportunity for fiber artists to show their work!  THANK YOU, THANK YOU, THANK YOU, everyone for your participation.  You ALL make FASA shine!

There’s an opportunity to be had for our next Exhibition in 2019.  The second Vice President position will be available for someone to step into this honored role of helping to ensure Fiber Artists in the community and around Texas will be supported again in an Exhibition at the University of Incarnate Word in October.  If you feel called to step up to serve FASA in this rewarding role (don’t be shy) please let me, or Jean Dahlgren (Nominating Committee) know.  You will be well supported and like myself, will have gained many rewards in being able to represent an organization that feeds our fiber passions and that of our many forever friends!

Remember, even thought the show is history, you can always see the work in the online catalog, here!

EXHIBITIONS AND OPPORTUNITIES
More Things Possible in Fiber Art!

Well, although by the time you will be reading this, the FASA 44th Annual Fiber Art Exhibit will be history, it does NOT mean that there won’t be other opportunities for FASA fiber artists to exhibit their wonderful work throughout our community!!!!  There ARE more things possible in fiber art!

We were invited by the librarian at the Forest Hills Library to set up a small exhibit of fiber artists’ work in their entry way space.  Thanks to these wonderful FASA members for stepping up to participate in the “I Felt Creative” display:

Cynthia Anderson
Peggy Baxter
Shirlene Harris
Amy Jones
Eleanor Khattar
Susan Lanford
Mark Steinhelper

This is a delightful display of felted art objects.  Take some time to go view this mini-exhibit through March 23rd.  The Forest Hills Library is located at 5245 Ingram Rd, San Antonio, TX 78228.  See: www.mysapl.org for map.
In addition, I am working to get a FASA member volunteer to do a small class for library patrons at the library in late April or thereafter on a simple fiber art activity.

In late March I will be putting out more information about the Spring exhibit at the Forest Hills library, similar to the one that was held there last year.  It will be a non-juried exhibit open to FASA members only.  This year the theme will be Phases of the Moon in celebration of the moon landing anniversary.  A monetary prize will be awarded based on popular vote.

Also, I recently started a conversation with a contact person at the Briscoe (Medical) Library at the UT Health Science Center.  They are interested in seeing what might be possible for a fiber art exhibit at their facility.  This is still in the discussion stage, so more to come on that possibility at a later date.

All of these opportunities serve the purposes that help to fulfill our organization’s mission: To promote appreciation and encourage support of fiber as an art form by the public through exhibitions and educational activities, and also to further serve educational, charitable and cultural purposes within the scope of our non-profit organization.

This is what makes me most appreciative of our members who DO get involved.  Whether your involvement is as a participating artist, a volunteer helper, or a board member, thank you for making FASA shine as an organization!

San Antonio Food Bank (SAFB)

The mission of SAFB is “to fight hunger in Southwest Texas through food distribution, programs, education, and advocacy”. One example of a program/education opportunity available through
the SA Food Bank is the Culinary Training Program.

This is a free 18-week workforce training
program, where students learn basic kitchen and culinary skills, safety and sanitation procedures, and receive hundreds of hours of hands-on training.

As a part of their training, one recent student applied her classroom learning by providing meals for children as a part of the Food Bank’s after-school dinner program, as well as the summer meals effort (Million Summer Meals for Kids).

The Food Bank distributes food, and they also provide an opportunity for growth, and second chances.

Thank you for all your donations, and allowing opportunities for second chances for so many!

See you on February 11 th !

SNIPPETS: Little tidbits of interest from your editor
Many of you remember the wonderful lecture and workshop by Shannon Weber. I just came across this delightful interview with here. I think you'll love the video.

Shannon Weber weaves original, one of a kind vessels from hand gathered materials, including plants, and pieces of debris she finds on the beach. Her finished works are distinctive and celebrate her creative power.
