Jack Greenawalt

Dear People of Grace,

As you know, our friend and brother Jack Greenawalt died at home on December 25, 2018. Jack grew up in Michigan. He served the Navy as a young man, then earned a Bachelor of Science from Northwestern University, a Masters of Arts from the University of Michigan, and an EdD from Harvard's School of Education. Jack's career in education took him to Japan, New York state, Massachusetts, and Minnesota. He served as Superintendent of Schools in Hopkins, Minnesota. While in Hopkins, he co-founded three multi-school district cooperatives: one for computer services, one for vocational schools, and a political action group to secure state funding for public schools.

Jack was deeply committed to family throughout his life, and is  survived by his wife, Donna; son, Paul; son, Mark; daughter, Martha; and grandchildren, Kate, Lauren, and Damoni Jackson. Jack was a lifelong student and he loved to garden and read, especially in history and religion. Jack's family suggests that those who wish to contribute to a memorial in Jack's name consider Helpline House, Island Volunteer Caregivers, or Grace Church. A memorial service for Jack will take place on Saturday, May 4 at 1pm at Grace Episcopal Church.

"God our Creator, you are the love at our beginning and without end, in our midst and with us. We remember before you today our brother Jack. Thank you for giving him to us to know and love as a companion. Thank  for the joy and encouragement Jack so faithfully shared with us. Comfort those who grieve his absence and even as we mourn, let Jack's soul sing out to you in the power of your Spirit. Amen"

In Christ's peace,

Wren

Jack and the Fox
   written by Jon Quitslund

Sitting at the sunny breakfast table with Jack
One morning, looking out at common little birds
Coming and going around the feeders,
We talked as we always do of many things:
Present-day politics, past experiences,
Working lives, friendships, families.
Jack is animated, eyes bright,
Enjoying his breakfast little by little.

In the same instant, we both see the fox.
Indifferent to us, alone, he owns the yard
But he won’t stay there. No place
Confines him. He moves at ease,
Perfectly fit, in the prime of life:
Eyes bright, calm and curious,
Silver in the sun, light on his feet,
Alive to the end of his beautiful tail.

Soon he is gone, but not before we’ve both
Enjoyed a once in a lifetime brush with grace.
