Expanding Horizons for Aquaculture in Wisconsin

Collaborating to Host Annual Conference...

This is a great conference for a variety of audiences, not only current producers but also researchers, educators, consumers or those simply wanting to learn more about the industry.

The Wisconsin Aquaculture Association has partnered with the UWSP NADF to offer the Wisconsin Aquaculture Conference 2019 in Eau Claire, Wisconsin on February 15th & 16th. Other collaborators include the University of Wisconsin Sea Grant, Minnesota Sea Grant, and North Central Regional Aquaculture Center (NCRAC). This year’s conference will offer a variety of presentations from experts around the region, trade show, “Taste of Wisconsin” Reception and auction.
 
Additional Workshop Training...
The conference will also feature an outreach and training workshop on Saturday, in collaboration with NCRAC. This addition is part of a NCRAC funded grant to deliver workshops and training on important topics region wide to expand the development of North Central Region aquaculture. Project partners include The Ohio State University, University of Minnesota and National Aquaculture Association. The project partners are currently working with UWSP NADF and the WAA to discuss the focus of the workshop as it will be geared towards the needs of Wisconsin farmers.

Aspiring Aquaculturists Graduate from Year-Long Training Program...

Funded by: USDA National Institute of Food and Agriculture through The Ohio State University.
 
In partnership with The Ohio State University (OSU), the UWSP Northern Aquaculture Demonstration Facility & UWSP Aquaponics Innovation Center collaborated with Nelson & Pade, Inc. ®  and WI Aquaculture Association to offer Wisconsin's first Aquaculture/Aquaponics Boot Camp class. This free of charge, year long training program featured a variety of important topics in aquaculture and aquaponics presented by experts. The training also included a variety of facility tours, hands on training, and further resources. The ABC students recently graduated the program on January 19th, 2019.

Supporting Atlantic Salmon Production in Wisconsin...
 
UWSP NADF in collaboration with Riverence, LLC. has supplied interested Wisconsin partners with Atlantic salmon eggs to raise in their systems for food fish production. Over the past several months, eggs were shipped from UWSP NADF to facility partners.  Project partners will report on the success of raising the Atlantics in their systems.

UWSP NADF strong partnership with Wisconsin Sea Grant supports various aquaculture research, educational and development projects at the facility.

Currently WISG is funding the development and advancement of new species for Wisconsin aquaculture, including two Walleye and Saugeye projects, featured in the Aquatic Sciences Chronicle at left.
Aquaculture Events

  • Mid-Continent Warmwater & Coolwater Fish Culture Workshops: February 4-6th, 2019 Council Bluffs, Iowa. Hosted by the Iowa Department of Natural Resources. Workshop participants share and learn what public hatcheries, researchers, universities, and aquaculture-related businesses are doing. The meeting has always been a great networking opportunity, but communication and information exchange relies on the folks attending to present topics of interest to the group.   • 2019 Wisconsin Aquaculture Conference: The 24th annual WI conference on February 15-16th in Eau Claire will be hosted by Wisconsin Aquaculture Association and UWSP NADF along with other collaborators including Wisconsin and Minnesota Sea Grant. A NCRAC funded workshop will also be included hosted by Ohio State, University of Minnesota and University of Michigan. See Flier...
