Itching to get gardening, but it’s too early to start seeds? Start your sweet potato slips!

Start growing your slips now to plant them out in late April or May. Start two potatoes, preferably of different varieties so at least one sprouts, half-submerged in water or potting soil. Keep in a warm area until slips start sprouting. Once roots have formed, gently remove slips from the potato and plant in a pot. Allow them to grow until you are ready to plant in the garden. Sweet potatoes need loose soil to grow big tubers, and one slip/root will grow about 5-10 tubes depending on the variety so plant carefully! They can either grow in trailing or bush form depending on how much space you have.

For our Community Gardeners:

Renewals are continuing all month, please ensure that if you would like to continue to garden, you must renew your plot. We have extended the deadline to February 11th due to website issues. If you do not wish to renew, or encounter any issues, please email coordinator@richmondfoodsecurity.org or call 604-244-7377.

Volunteering in your community garden:

Our 2019 Community Garden season is about to kick off, and we’re excited here at RFSS.
What does community gardening look like? In our gardens
,community is built by sharing responsibilities. By caring for the area in which we garden and lending a hand to those is need.
We encourage our community gardeners to pick up a few extra tasks around the garden, many hands make light work!
Opportunities include garden reviewer, tool monitor, mulch monitor, and many more.

Please contact coordinator@richmondfoodsecurity.org or call 604-244-7377 on how you would like to get involved.
