Hi <<First Name>>,
Another long newsletter - Startup Tablelands is galloping into 2019 with so many events (and we're not even out of Jan yet!)

Aust Day Ceremony

Is it possible that the hols are over and Australia Day is all but upon us already?
You may not be ready for it, but Aust Day ceremonies will be ready for you both in Mareeba Shire and Tablelands Regional Council (TRC) area on Friday evening, 25 January.
ST’s international hit event, the Future Agro Challenge (FAC), has been nominated in TRC’s competition in the category of Commerce, Industry and Innovation.
Christine Doan will be attending on your behalf.
She would love to see as many of you ST supporters there as possible and if you text her on 0419 656 247 to let her know you are coming, an ST contingent can sit together.
At least this year’s program will not be the all-day drawn-out affair of old.
It starts with networking at 5 pm at the Atherton  International Club, 60 Kennedy Highway.
The awards presentation and citizenship ceremony will be relatively brief with an official 5.30pm start (but no stated duration).
There is no cost and in the past hot drinks and nibbles have been provided with drinks and meals available from the bar and restaurant.
ST has already won an Aus Day award so may miss out this time, however, there are only three nominees in the category.  Wish ST/FAC luck from afar, or, better still, join Christine and other ST fans Friday evening at the International Club, Atherton, for a packed evening program.

Lunch & Learn -  Build Your Own Business App (no programming required!!!) 🤩

Need software for your business, but can't find what you need - build your own with no programming skills needed !!

ST’s own workhorse, Seamus Campbell, will start off the year with a Lunch & Learn mini-workshop on either 5 or 12 February.
WATCH THIS SPACE!
(We’re running a bit behind on event organising in spite of having a great Events Team up and running!  Do not hesitate to volunteer to help out on that subcommittee!)
Seamus is one of the magical tech-savvy types amongst our ST Drivers.  His special skill is to see how someone’s brain works (we are not quite as standardised as computers---and certainly more complex!) and to find ways to tweak software so the software fits the brain, rather than having to bend your brain to match your software.
If you are tech oriented, you will love hanging with Seamus as he is so knowledgeable, with a speciality in collaborative software.  If you are tech-phobic you will be even more keen to hang with Seamus so that your furrowed brow can unfurrow a bit in the assurance that you and your computer can stop hating each other---and maybe even find ways to like each other!  What a boon!

SENT/KPMG/Jobs Queensland Forum on Social Enterprise

All are invited to attend a free forum being held by Jobs Queensland in Cairns, Friday 1 February 2019 11:00 am – 1:00 pm (AEST) at James Cook University (Cairns campus, Building D3, Room 054) discuss social enterprise in Queensland. A light lunch will be provided.

For more information and to register your intention to attend the forum access this EventBrite link (bookings close on early next week)

Know anything about social enterprise?  Want to know more?  Here’s an opportunity, an opportunity that Christine and Seamus and a few other Tablelanders have jumped on board with to help inform themselves and others to spruik social enterprise as a small business option. Let’s delete one misconception, to begin with: social enterprises are a form of Not For Profit (NFP) but NFP’s are required to re-invest their profits in the NFP, however, they are perfectly legally capable of paying staff, including the founder and other investors/contributors.  So please do not think that social enterprises are only for barefoot hippies or wealthy benefactors.  Social enterprises need profitable business models---they are only required to plough that profit (after paying costs including wages) back into the business.  Maybe it’s time for all of us who have any form of business nous combined with social justice ethics to learn more about this wonderful business option.

So what is this event on:
Jobs Queensland is undertaking research to dive into understanding the role of government in helping to support social enterprise activity to deliver economic and social outcomes for Queensland.
The research will specifically consider the extent, role and outcomes of social enterprises in Queensland’s business and jobs market,  and assess the costs and benefits of possible mechanisms for government support

Further information can be found online via the Jobs Queensland website at https://jobsqueensland.qld.gov.au/projects/social-enterprise/.
