Bold steps toward quality cancer care

We are working in Tanzania because we believe that hope and dignity are not commodities reserved to the global elite – they are fundamental human rights, deserved by all.

A Message from the CEO

Happy New Year from your friends at FCCT!

2019 promises exciting possibilities for FCCT thanks to the engagement of generous supporters like yourself. The October gala was an energizing affair with many new friends introduced to our inspiring mission.

With the funds raised, FCCT will be focusing on completing a 44-bed inpatient cancer ward on the Kilimanjaro Christian Medical Center (KCMC) campus in Moshi, Tanzania to provide cancer-specific care and treatment.

We know that one annual event won’t provide the resources necessary to complete this much needed unit so we will continue to seek funding from a variety of sources during 2019.

We’ve also been working with partners, such as Rotary Clubs, to help fund other phases of the cancer center, including a family care hostel to reduce abandonment of treatment, especially among children, which is a problem in Tanzania.

I am looking forward to sharing highlights from my recent visit to Tanzania where I had the chance to see firsthand the progress underway and the impact providers such as Dr. Furaha Serventi and Dr. Oliver Henke are having on the care of patients at the cancer care centre and in the remote villages and communities near Moshi.

As I reflect on 2018, I am filled with appreciation for your support of FCCT. Looking ahead to 2019, I am inspired knowing that together we are making progress and bringing hope for an improved quality of life to people with cancer.

Provider Feature | Tara Rick

FCCT board member and oncologist PA Tara Rick provides clinical breast exam training for clinicians. Without widespread screening mammography, the breast exam is an important tool to aid ultrasonography and biopsy in the earlier diagnosis of breast cancers in Tanzania

Pediatrician Fellow | Dr. Ester Majaliwa
Medical Education Partnership Initiatives

“Since I began my training in May 2018, I have learned so much about pediatric hematology and oncology.

This training has enabled me to understand evidence-based care in pediatric patients with malignancies in a multidisciplinary approach. I am also learning different skills and approaches to diagnostics and management and new medications available in the market. During these few months, I have managed to identify areas which need improvement and strengthening in pediatric oncology patient care at KCMC hospital. No doubt there is a lot that needs to be done, but I am courageous enough to believe that it is possible.

I am very grateful to my sponsor (TAKEDA) for providing this opportunity and for caring for the well-being of pediatric oncology patients in Tanzania.”
