Notes on reviving a painting practice
New Work: Flora, oil on canvas, 20 x 20 in. A commission of a client's grandmother

Flora! Flora! Flora!

Since the bouquet of flowers I bought to incorporate into the above portrait has stayed pert, I made a couple more paintings of it, and it has kept me pert too during Chicago’s typical January muckiness. Pictured here is an 11 x 14 in. oil on panel.

On the Blog: O-Soji

I was cleaning up my studio in December, and my sister told me that in Japan there’s a word for this year-end tradition called “o-soji,” the great clean. We call this a purge, but now that there’s a freaky horror movie with that name, I prefer o-soji. My soji coincided with a studio visit by a new client, and I decided to take it to the next level.  READ MORE.

On the Easel: Industry and Fluffy Clouds

There is a great view across the manufacturing district along Elston Avenue and the Chicago River. Many of the buildings have been razed for future residential development, but until then, you can see a vast expanse of an older Chicago. In my picture you can see a drawbridge typical along the river—a bascule bridge—which has a beautiful arc that has always reminded me of a wing.

On the Horizon: 30 Paintings in 30 Days

I'm gearing up for my third round of this painting challenge in which I attempt to paint 30 paintings in 30 days. The keys to success are to paint small and choose a theme ahead of time so that you don't waste time wondering what to paint each day. This time I'm asking for your input: What should I paint?

A theme could be a subject, a color, a mood . .  what else? Reply to this message or shoot me a text in the next couple of days so I can assemble my materials. As always, all of the paintings I make will be for sale at the end of the challenge. Thank you!
