Idaho State VP of Student Affairs/AD Search Committee Chair Redington catches up with the ISU student newspaper on the topic of the ongoing AD search in Pocatello. Most of the piece is simply a rehash of the official job description, but here are a couple of additional key takeaways, "We hope to have the process wrapped up by the end of March or first part of April. […] President Satterlee will make the final decision. However, having had the pleasure of working with him for 6 months, I know his style to be one of inclusion. He is committed to learning what our campus and our community believe are important qualities in an athletic director. That said, he also is the one who will look at the big picture of what is needed to move our athletic program forward and who will be the best candidate to do so." (link)
Marquette lays claim to becoming the "first program in a major athletic conference" to add esports as a varsity program. Student Affairs, the College of Arts & Sciences, Office of Admissions & Department of Computer Science will also all be heavily involved in the launch & operation. Tryouts, a HC, practice, dedicated facility all in the plans. Intersport with consulting help. (linklink)
The NCAA paying for family travel for MBB & WBB student-athletes participating in the Final Four is no longer a pilot program & is now a permanent staple. $3,000 per student-athlete family who lose in the semifinals, $4K for those who play in the title game. Also, from Orlando, "...the Council approved a new legislative process that will require conferences to submit legislative concepts by July 15 if they intend to sponsor legislation in the ensuing legislative cycle. [...] The Council introduced amendments to current early recruiting legislative proposals that would remove the specific initial date for verbal offers from both the broad early recruiting proposal and the one specific to men’s ice hockey." Penn AD Calhoun is your new Chair of the DI Council. More. (link); A Presidential Forum pushed the DI Council to review "the interpretations process that schools and the Committee on Infractions can use to request an interpretation from the NCAA staff of certain rules in the context of an infractions case" at the recommendation of a working group. (link)
The AP's Russo reports on some student-athlete transfer waiver numbers from 2018, "...waiver approval from April 1-Nov. 9 was 66 percent across all sports, down from the 2017-18 school year when it was 83 percent." Since last year's change in the waiver process, 63% of FB requests were approved, 55% for MBB & 39% for WBB. NCAA VP of Academic & Membership Affairs Schnase: "We feel like the pendulum has swung back to the right place. But how we answer that and how anybody answers that depends on the seat that he or she is sitting in. Coaches might feel one way. Presidents and ADs (athletic directors) might feel another. And student-athletes might feel a different way.(link); 247Sports has created a public facing version of the NCAA's FB Transfer Portal. No idea how they did it, but this is sure to get a ton of clicks. (link)
Texas A&M & Ohio State both jump the $200M budget shark. For the Aggies: $212.4M on top over $165.8M on bottom, though there's still a big chunk of donations for capital projects. When balanced out, the surplus was around $3M in College Station. Buckeyes: $205.6M against $203.8M. Check this out, "This is the second time in four years that Ohio State has had a single-year revenue increase of more than $20 million. In 2016, it jumped from just over $145 million to just over $167 million." However, OSU's operating expenses have grown by nearly $50M (adjusted for inflation) since just 2015. Lots more data in the USA Today piece. Second link here is a review of A&M FB coaching salary growth since 2012-13 that advanced from a touch over $5M to $18.2M. More. (linklink)
"This facility once completed will be comparable to many Power 5 football buildings. We’re very excited about that." That's Liberty AD McCaw on a $25M renovation coming for FB's operations building, with completion expected by January of 2020. Square footage to increase from 18K to more than 65K. More, McCaw, who points to the importance of a revamped player lounge & recruiting room, "This building will be designed to really tie into the stadium and create a much more intimate environment for our home football games. I think it, again, will be a much better gameday atmosphere and home-field advantage for the team." (link)
Where? Clemson, SC. The Tigers unveiled a new National Championship mark & recount the story of the mark's design. Howard's Rock, the Golden Gate Bridge & two stars representing the 1981 & 2016 titles. AD Radakovich pushed for more orange, less purple in the final version. (link); Where? Greenville, NC. Area leaders are pushing to add the "BAR-B-Q Bowl" to the roster of post-season gridiron matchups come 2020. (link); Where? Olympia, WA. A state representative's proposal to compensate student-athletes on name, image, likeness fronts got a hearing yesterday. No report yet on how things went. We'll keep an eye out. (link)

Arizona's Board of Regents will hold another special meeting today to review "legal advice and discussion regarding University of Arizona Men’s Basketball." Of note, Wildcats AD Heeke was in Orlando yesterday for the NCAA Convention & Pac-12 meetings. (link, link); Zona MBB HC Miller offered a "no comment" when asked about his thoughts on former AC Richardson pleading guilty in his MBB-FBI case. (link)
Louisville boss Tyra says he didn't really know what to fully expect when he took over the UofL department & that "it's a different kind of scrutiny" than leading a public company where shareholders are primarily concerned with bottom line performance. "I'm just myself when I deal with the media." Tyra also notes continued budget focus in the Derby City, which he indicates has a lot to do with his own DNA as an individual & leader. A bit more. (link)
St. Francis (NY) AD Garcia connects with 1.Question's Brown to chat on principled leadership. Interestingly, Garcia and her staff select a theme for each year & implement programs to emphasize the theme throughout the department. Of note, "If you were to visit our department, you would get a sense of family, belonging, gratefulness, and all things that matter to us. […] I think my purpose started way before I became an AD and when I made it to that person, we had to find a different way to win? […] It's all about positive change, listening to people and taking the engagement and doing something with it." More. Fifteen-minute convo. (link)
First-year Minnesota WBB HC Whalen didn't lose much during her own Gopher playing days, but her introduction to the collegiate sidelines has included a 2-5 Big Ten start. How has she coped? Whalen: "I felt like I was going to throw up for 48 straight hours after the Illinois loss. I had never had that as a player. […] It’s different as a coach. I think I feel worse. As a player, you have some moments where you go, ‘I need to work on my three-point shooting or free throws.’ As coach, I’m finding out, 'OK, how can I help? What more can I do?'" (link)
Looks like the NFL's Rooney Rule may get a tweak with a proposal on the table for every organization to hire two minorities per team into quality control roles. Fritz Pollard Alliance chairman Wooten: "It’s very obvious to us all that if you’re going to build a pipeline, you must follow the procedure that we’re outlining. I’m not talking about [coaching] internships. I’m talking about putting them in positions where they’re going to have opportunities to advance. This should be done because this is what the league is about. The league is about opportunity. We know the road that we must travel." (link, link)
More Leadership Notes: Arkansas Assoc. AD for Premium Seat Services and Guest Experience Parris has been hired as VP for Partner Success with FEVO; Cal State Fullerton Baseball HC Vanderhook inks an extension that could see him continue to lead the Titans through the 2024 season. (link); Western Carolina AD Eaton hires UNC Asheville Cross Country/Track & Field HC Norman for the same gig in Cullowhee. (link); Marshall AD Hamrick turns to Grand Canyon AC Aganus to take over the Thundering Herd Volleyball program. (link): James Madison Volleyball HC Steinbrecher extended thorough the 2023 season. (link); New Florida State FB OC Briles is another new $1M+ coordinator. No buyout if he gets a HC job, $500K within 30 days otherwise. (link)
New College of Charleston Prez Tsu will make $410K annually & officially begin his duties in mid-May, comments on the investigation into how Cougars AD Roberts handled a Baseball HC change. Hsu: "Obviously I do not know the details of this particular case, but certainly I would hold our administrators to the highest standard in terms of their integrity and make sure that if something inappropriate happened before that it doesn’t happen again." (link)
Oakland AD Waterfield points to the need for "dramatic improvement" of the Grizzlies Baseball & Softball facilities, an item that remains high on his list as a main goal. Waterfield says he's done quite a bit of listening, observing & learning early in his tenure. Overarching thoughts on what he's absorbed so far, "I think there are things structurally in Athletics that have prevented us from truly being Division I in certain areas. As we start to build toward that and make more progress I feel we’ll make more strides. There’s a lot of work to be done here, but there’s a lot of work to be done at every Division I school." (link)
Another relatively new AD is Saint Joseph's Bodensteiner, who answers a set of questions for the university's media arm. Bodensteiner indicates she's been "blown away" by the quality of student-athletes on The Hill, hasn't felt homesick or overwhelmed at all during her first six-plus months in the chair. Bodensteiner on challenges of the job, "I need to make sure that I am focused on revenue generation and all of the external facing activities that entails, including fundraising, marketing, tickets, corporate sponsors, communications and the fan experience. Equally important is the internal expectations, like human resources, risk management, finances, facilities, and being a good campus partner … all of those things are a critical part of what I do. But those duties all pale in comparison to the importance of staying connected to the student athletes – that group is the heart and soul of what we do, and I never want to get too involved with the other aspects of the job such that I forget about the reason we're all here." (link)
South Dakota State's FY18 resulted in a $1.2M deficit, but the Students' Association will raise its General Activity Fee and redirect money from the Student Union Maintenance and Repair fund over the course of two years to help address the deficit, pay for Frost Arena renovations and fund NCAA Division I requirements. The GAF steering committee proposed a $3 uptick for Frost Arena and another $2.47 for athletics operations the following year. 95% of responding students indicated via the GAF Strategic Plan General Survey that they didn't want to give additional funding to athletics, so the increase will only be $0.51, leaving athletics with $500K still to cover. Cutting both tennis programs yielded a savings between $200K-250K. More here. (link)
Also Noticed: Our deepest condolences to the Montana family as FB student-athlete Harris has passed away at the age of 22. (link); LEAD1 boss McMillen discusses the impact of Title IX in this edition of his Byte of the Week. (link); Texas Prez Fenves on the live mascot situation in Austin: "We take the safety very seriously, but we’re going to continue to have Bevo as our mascot." (link); During the 12th annual V Week, ESPN set an all-time record raising $8.3M for the V Foundation for Cancer Research. It was an 83% year-over-year increase. (link); Colorado will raise FB season tix prices anywhere from $26 to $75 per ticket for an average 7.8% uptick. Last year's price increase was an average of 2.86%. AD George notes the decision was made prior to parting ways with former HC MacIntyre. (link); Penn State FB adds home games with Ohio in 2022 and UMass in 2023. (link); More on the rising cost of insurance for athletics, this time in the state of Tennessee specifically, where the cost of coverage for middle and high school athletes is going up. The Tennessee Secondary Schools Athletic Association spends a third of its operating budget on insurance, as yearly premiums are $530K with $25K deductibles. (link)
