JANUARY 2019 Meeting Recap

The featured artist at the meeting was Marlene Gremillion. Marlene never has a dull moment, she works in many different types of medium and is an instructor.  She presented her polymer clay creations. This is a fairly new art form that is around 52 years old.  She uses Primo clay for her art because it's the easiest to work with. She uses a pasta machine to condition her clay first.  She demonstrated how to make a blend ( 2 colors), how to make a tight roll (bullseye), and how to put canes together to make other colors and dimension. She also demonstrated making veneers (flat design) and making creative paintings into them.  She also makes many different types of jewelry (earrings, necklaces, bracelets).  Once she is complete with any of her designs she puts them in the oven at 275 degrees to cure the clay.  You can find her website on the  internet to view or buy her artwork or sign up for a class.

Downtown Art Project Underway
President Byrum reported the following at the January meeting:

The town of Conway has been working hard to revamp and restore the downtown buildings. One of the goals is to bring more people to visit, eat, shop, and stay in an out of the ordinary downtown area. Don and Kim Williams (Account executive at Conway Area Chamber of Commerce) have discussed using the open window space in the downtown shops to display artwork from Conway League of Artists members and students from local schools and colleges. Eventually this could range from outdoor murals and window exhibits to bring visitors to the first Drive Thru Art Gallery.

The exciting news is that Phase 1 of this project has begun!

CALL FOR ARTWORK!

The Windows of Conway

Phase I of "The Windows of Conway" is happening Saturday January 26th at 10:00 AM!

We will need roughly 30 pieces of art from CLA members to put on display at American Management Corp (AMC) Building at 10 am. The building is located at 824 Front St (between Mike's Place and Senior Tequilas restaurants and across the street from Simon Park).

Since this the first time for this project, we're not sure of the response, so please contact Don Byram at donp4e@gmail.com or text him at 706.380.2593 with what you might have to display. Right now, probably 2 pieces or so per artist is a ballpark guess. (Don doesn't use his voice mail, so emailing or texting works best - or who knows, he might even answer his phone for you!)

Size isn't an issue, but having an artist bio and statement on the artwork would be very helpful. You can email those to Don.

PS - Thank you, Don, for arranging this "first of its kind" exhibit!  We hope this is the start of something big that will increase awareness and appreciation of the arts in  our community! Members, please participate!!!
