Women's health after spinal cord injury

Dr. Andrei Krassioukov will host the 5th International Autonomic Symposium on February 13, 2019 at the Blusson Spinal Cord Centre. Click here to register or for more information.

This event, organized by Drs. Wolfram Tetzlaff and Karim Fouad (U of A) will take place at the Blusson Spinal Cord Centre. Click here for information and registration.

PhD? Check. Adorable daughter? Check.

Former Ramer Lab trainee Diana Hunter and her husband Dave are very excited to announce to the world the birth of their first child, Lucille Verity Hunter Vanspall!  She arrived somewhat unexpectedly, which is rather ironic given that she was born precisely on her due date: January 4th.
Measuring in at a perfect “tall and skinny” 7lbs, 3oz and 20.5” long, their sassy little girl has dark wavy hair and a penchant for eating that conclusively proves she is her parents’ daughter! Diana and Lucy didn’t spend too long in the hospital (less than 48 hours) because after the bit of a rocky start, Lucy passed all her tests and screens with ease (taking after her Mom already?).
Everyone is doing well: Lucy continues to have a healthy appetite, Diana is recovering, and Dave is tired and keeps having people tell him “get used to it!”

Vancouver Cantata Singers presents

Musica Universalis

Saturday February 23, 7:30pm
BSCC Atrium

Musica Universalis, or ‘universal music’, refers to an ancient philosophical concept that the movement of celestial bodies create their own music based the mathematical proportions and vibrations of their inter-relational orbits. This idea, that the universe and galaxies have their own celestial music, has inspired many composers to create choral music of both sacred and secular texts.
The Vancouver Cantata Singers brings you a concert of 19th century and contemporary works, exploring the poetry and music of the planets and heavenly spheres. The concert features works by internationally renowned classical choral composers such as Erik Ešenvalds, Ola Gjeilo and Vancouver-based composers, Stephen Chatman, Craig Galbraith, and Larry Nickel. Plus an arrangement for choir of Bjork’s Cosmogony by local composer, Kristopher Fulton.

If you've never heard the VCS singing in the BSCC Atrium, check out this video for a special treat!

Meet some new people, make some connections

The next D.R.I.N.K.S. (Discussions Relevant to Inspiring New Knowledge & Science) social will happen on February 22 from 4 to 7pm at Mahoney's Stamps Landing. The purpose (if you need an excuse to stay a little later!) is to bring together faculty, clinicians, scientists, residents, trainees, staff, entrepreneurs, bio/pharm staff/execs/veterans, lawyers, VCs, journalists/editors, sabbaticals, and others with common interests in biomedical/translational research & discovery/commercialization once a month to casually interact and meet new people over a beverage of their choice and/or appie. It's also becoming a great way for people who have just moved to or are visiting Vancouver, or looking for collaborations, jobs, networking/socializing, to meet others in research/biomedical field/industry.
Future dates: Mar 28, Apr 18, 4-7pm

MSFHR Health Professional Investigator Award

LOI Deadline - February 11
The MSFHR Health Professional-Investigator (HP-I) Program is intended to help close the gap between health research and its implementation. It does this by supporting practicing health professionals who wish to conduct and apply research that leverages their practical knowledge in patient care in order to improve the patient experience and outcomes. The HP-I Program achieves this by contributing to the award recipient’s salary in order to protect time for research, and/or by defraying the cost of research personnel directly associated with the award recipient’s proposed research, if applicable.

Registration Deadline: February 6
Application Deadline: March 6

UBC SPARC is offering a variety of support services for this grant competition. Check out SPARC's CIHR Project Grant page.

MSFHR Health System Impact Fellowship

MSFHR is partnering with CIHR on their 2019 Health System Impact Fellowship program to help develop BC’s health policy research talent and build capacity for the integration of policy into decision-making. For health system organizations this is an opportunity to have a policy fellow contribute their research and analytic talents to a specific health policy challenge. For researchers, it is an opportunity to apply their research expertise and develop their policy skills.
BC had great success in the 2018 competition with 13 CIHR Fellows placed in BC health organizations to address pressing policy issues in our province. You can see the list of 2018 BC institutions and projects here.
The 2019 Health System Impact Fellowship competition is now open for applications. If you have any health researchers with an interest in applying their skills to a local health policy issue at either the PhD or post-doctoral fellow level, they can find more information on the MSFHR website and ResearchNet. On both sites you will find a list of health system organizations that are interested in hosting an embedded scholar. Applicants are also welcome to apply with a host organization that is not listed.

Working on a grant application?

SPARC can help!

UBC's Support Programs to Advance Research Capacity (SPARC) offers comprehensive reviews for competitive funding applications, as well as workshops and tutorials to streamline the application process. Learn about the different services they offer, get to know their team, or contact them with any questions that you have about research support at UBC.

Interesting things x2

Up for some sport-phishing?

Google, and Jigsaw, a subsidiary of Alphabet, have put together a little quiz to see how adept people are at spotting nasty scam emails, and you can try it too. If you happen to have difficulty determining which of the 8 emails you're subjected to are legit fear not, after completing it the quiz also helps you sharpen your email awareness based on what caught you off guard.

You've got your videogames in my paleontology

A newly discovered species of prehistoric shark, which lived about 67 million years ago in the company of species like the iconic T.Rex has been named after a 1980s videogame because of the shape of its teeth. The Galagadon nordquistae was given its name because its teeth very much resemble the protagonist spacecraft featured in the arcade smash Galaga, published by Namco and Midway Games in September of 1981.

What is the BICP?

You've likely seen the badge in our newsletter and the posters around the atrium, telling people about the Blusson Integrated Cures Partnership, but do you know about all of the different kinds of research and activities being supported by the BICP? ICORD and the Rick Hansen Institute have created a webpage to inform you about the work that we're doing together with the Rick Hansen Foundation through this unique collaboration.
