Common Creativity

A break from the usual
marketing noise.

Issue 15 | Jan 19, 2019

New Year, New Look.

The holidays are over and I started a big project as 2018 fizzled out of existence. I started a brand refresh for myself. I'm still not all the way there. I am still working on nailing down my tiny clone to do fresh shots, but the website is shaping up and I'll be revealing the finished product in the next issue! All I'll say is that it's pretty rad.

New Year, New Clients.

As in every year before, I am free to accept lots of new clients this year. Every year I get my loyal client base from years past, but I also lose a couple clients. Whether they were a one project kind of business or they took their design in-house (or to someone more expensive / cheaper) ... not everyone can stick around forever.
So, that leaves me free to quote new web development and brand development gigs right now. A few folks have already stated the ball rolling. Rates never go down folks, now is always the best time.

WordPress and MailChimp Training

This past year I taught more people WordPress and MailChimp than ever before. These are probably pretty integral tools if you run your own business. If they're not ... they probably should be. These two platforms together create a solid online presence that will outlive any social media connection you might think you have with your audience.

I offer one-on-one sessions and small team seminars and it's always lots of fun and very educational. Request a quote today.

Marketing Tip:
Focus on what's real.

There they are. Your audience. All immersed in some online experience or another. Staring blankly at their devices. Some are browsing Facebook, others are reading news. All of them are missing out on experiences and connections that are right in from of them. Ahh, the internet at work.

Is it just me or has social media become one, big commercial? It feels so congested and isolating at the same time. More and more reports keep pointing to social media as a major factor in poor mental health. Especially among the heaviest users, our younger generations. It's why I'm paring down my exposure to it a lot this year. (More about how I'm going to navigate my digital marketing without Facebook exposure in an upcoming blog).

Don't get me wrong, it's a great tool to reach more people. There's still just so much missing there for me.

What used to be a way to connect personally has become just another way for brands to get another paid ad in front of us. I very rarely see brands interacting with their audience on social media. And at the end of the day, those brands don't own that data. All of those connections would be gone if one of those platforms disappeared.

There is another connection that you do own, though.

I know that plenty of you collect emails, but are you really getting the most out of them? Are you using the information your customers give you to really connect with them? Or are you just tossing a sale at them every so often?

Try this: Ask for your customer's birth date / month. Then set up an automation (MailChimip for the win). Send them a note. Maybe a little freebie or discount next time they stop in. I love it when a brand I love thinks of me as more than just a credit card with legs.

Don't miss an opportunity to collect feedback or offer a more personalized experience. When all is said and done, you don't own the connection you have on social media. You have to treat Facebook and Instagram as what they are - another great advertising tool to supplement your personal connection with your audience.
