Former CBSSports.com headliner & current Aspen Institute Executive Director Solomon counters Pop Warner Executive Director Butler's stance that if youth FB loses access to insurance all other youth sports are also in trouble. Solomon: "This is hyperbolic talk. Other youth sports don't carry the same risks as football." According to Aspen Institute & the Healthy Sport Index, FB has by far the highest injury rate, highest catastrophic rate of injury, highest rate of injuries requiring surgery & highest concussion rate. Comparative cohort: Basketball, Baseball, Cross Country, Lacrosse, Soccer, Swimming, Tennis, Track & Field & Wrestling. (link, link)
UConn self-imposes penalties to its MBB program due to improprieties by the former staff led by HC Ollie. A reduction of scholarships for next season from 13 to 12, a one week recruiting communication ban this season & one less official visit in 2018-19 look to be the teeth. The Huskies point to Ollie's "cavalier" attitude to compliance. AD Benedict: "Our athletics department recognizes its responsibility to promote an atmosphere of honesty and integrity as it relates to NCAA compliance and beyond. We take these allegations very seriously and will continue to fully cooperate with the NCAA throughout this process." (link)
From the Omaha World-Herald's McKewon, "Nebraska AD Bill Moos on @OWHBottomLine advocates for a 8-team playoff that features the five Power 5 Conference champions regardless of record, with the first round of games to be played on campuses." (link); Also from Lincoln, apparel sales since the hire of new FB HC Frost are up 30 to 35 percent. Moos on if MBB has all the necessary resources to compete nationally, "Absolutely. We've got resources here that are second to no one. You look at our facilities... men's basketball, it's about as good as it is. You look at a sold-out arena that we sold 15,000 season tickets within three or four weeks, so with a passionate fan base, is super." Moos also says he's adamant about keeping the Black Friday FB game in place due to its exclusive national broadcast window. More. (link)
KUSports.com continues to press Kansas on its inclusion of $1.5M worth of Adidas money on two sets of FY18 financial statements. Two-fold question: 1) Is KU including the cash on the statements even though it may not be received if the new deal with Adidas isn't signed; or, 2) Has the deal been signed & the Jayhawks haven't said anything publicly yet? Per the article, "It is unlikely that KU actually has received additional royalty payments from Adidas. Rather, it seems that KU is booking a promise of additional royalty payments on its financial statements as an 'account receivable.'" More, including lots of open records requests. (link); KU reports an uptick in FB season ticket sales as the 2018 season finished with $3.98M generated for tix. Up from $3.41M in 2017. MBB season sales in '18 were $15.85M. Overall, the Jayhawks did $106.3M in revenues over $104.1M in expenses. More financial data included. (link)
Virginia Tech's FY18 ended $4.8M in the black on $98.485M in revenues (up $11M year over year) against $93.5M in expenses. Ticket sales jumped from $17.3M to $19.4M, contributions from $15.6M to $22.1M, media rights from $22.4M to $25.2M. Most ticket revenue ever for the Hokies. FB overall did $57.6M in revenue. MBB at $14.2M. A bit more. (link)
Winthrop AD Halpin notes the challenge of not having a natural conference rival, one he says was lost when Coastal Carolina exited for the Sun Belt. However, with USC Upstate new to the Big South & just 63 miles separating the two schools, Spartans AD Feig hops his side can build up a challenge to the Eagles. Halpin: "Can Upstate be a rivalry? Absolutely. But in order to have a rivalry there has to be multiple competitions with significant stakes involved. Both programs at the point in which they collide, have to be battling it out at the top. […] A true rivalry can’t be manufactured. It almost takes circumstances beyond your control. And you can fuel it but you have to be competing for championships for one to develop." (link)

Richmond AD Hardt announces a new org flow for the Spiders, featuring three leadership groups: Senior Staff, Operations & Management Group, and the Sport Management Group. Coastal Carolina FB HC Moglia steps away from his HC duties, hands the reigns to OC & former Charleston Southern HC Chadwell. Here's where it gets interesting. Moglia, per a letter to the Chants fanbase, "I will stay on for the duration of my contract (June 2021) as Chairman of Athletics and will still have executive authority for football. Coach Chadwell will report to me and I will report to (President) Dr. DeCenzo. I will do all I can to provide support to the program. Matt [Hogue] will continue as the Director of Athletics and has responsibility for everything else within the athletics department and administrative responsibilities for football." Well then. (link)
Buffalo MBB HC Oats the latest to publicly note a wrinkle of the new NET ratings system, "I told the referees, 'With the new NET, our efficiency is a big deal.' We can’t just throw the last two minutes away. We’ve done that in the past, where we’re up and it should have been a 30-point win, and it ends up going from 22 to 24 to 16 rather than up to 30. That’s a big deal. Your efficiency should be one thing and it ends up another. People don’t realize it in the last two (minutes)." (link); The Athletic's Hamilton profiled Oats earlier in the week as the UB HC is likely to be a very hot name when the carousel begins in a couple of months. Bulls AD Alnutt: "But [losing Oats] won’t be for me not being proactive, or for me not being attentive to the program needs. I look at it day by day, us working together to continue to grow this program. And if that [offer] comes, I want to be in position that it’s not an easy decision for him." (link)
Stadium's Goodman continues his 'Conference Chain of Command' series with the MAAC as league coaches voted on the best HC chairs using nine variables. Final standings: Siena, Iona, Monmouth, Quinnipiac, Fairfield, Rider, Manhattan, Canisius, Marist, Niagara, St. Peter's. Biggest single data point outliers are Iona at 9th in 'buy games,' but 2nd overall, as well as Quinnipiac at 11th in 'history/tradition,' but 4th overall. (link)

Stadium CEO Coyle does an AMA (Ask Me Anything) with Reddit. What changes does Coyle believe we'll see in the TV ecosystem come 2021? "First, I believe we'll have a much higher quality signal on TV as the new standard ATSC 3.0 rolls out. By then, our plan is to have become the most widely distributed / easily available sports network that there is. Well beyond the basic cable reach. With that, we anticipate continuing to add more rights, talent, and original programming. It's our job to be the standard bearer for a nation of sports fans who want and deserve a free daily network, and we're committed to making it a premier experience." Also of note, "Our pitch to live rights holders is that, in order to grow and reach the maximum potential audience, they need to have a package of rights (not the whole thing) widely distributed and reaching fans who aren't their hardest core base. In other words, we'll partner with them for some of their content and basically provide marketing / awareness by putting their content in front of fans everywhere (and it's great content for us). If they go solely behind a paywall, we think they risk stopping growth and relevance." More. (link); Notable virtual reality (VR) firm NextVR has laid off 40% of its team. Per a source, "It's a bad omen for VR." (link)
Eastern Washington AD Hickey & Prez Cullinan op ed for The Spokesman-Review, "Yes, we want to win another national championship. We will work hard to return to Frisco. But EWU doesn’t support an athletic program with the primary goal of winning championships. Eastern’s fundamental mission is academic: We’re here to educate, to help prepare the next generation of successful citizens and community leaders. We’re an engine for the professional workforce of this region and state. […] The success of EWU’s football program turns a spotlight on our academic excellence: Thousands of people visited our academic websites before, during, and after the game in Frisco. Athletics help create pride and traditions on campus. And, by bringing national attention to our university, athletic success actually adds value to our academic degrees. Our success shines a bright light on our region and our state." (link)
UAB again ripped off over $5M in total fundraising contributions during the calendar year of 2018. Of note, "In addition, UAB Athletics engaged 650 new Blazer Boosters members who gave in 2018 who had not given in the prior year. Thanks to these new members as well as returning generous supporters, Blazer Boosters finished 2018 with over 1,850 donors for the second straight year." (link)
Louisville will reduce MBB season ticket prices in the upper bowl of the by up to 42% next season in an attempt to stimulate sales. Cards AD Tyra: "With attendance across collegiate and professional sports, there is a decline...We are trying to be responsive to the fans and to the climate. We recognize the issues." UofL will also lower the required donation per seat fee for many upper level options. Lower level ticket prices & donation requirements to stay the same. (link)
Here's a comprehensive list of the 135 FB student-athletes who are headed to the NFL early. (link); Last year there were 123 early entrants, 36 of whom went in the first two rounds, but 40 weren't drafted at all. The Athletic's Olson: "Since 2014, the College Advisory Committee (CAC) has been advising players who aren’t projected to go in the first or second rounds to stay in school. In a study by The Athletic of every underclassman who went pro since 2013, 35 percent became first- or second-rounders. The rest are taking a significant risk by leaving college early, especially considering more than 30 percent have gone undrafted." (link)
Facilities: Florida Atlantic AD White thinks the new Schmidt Family Complex for Academic and Athletic Excellence will be ready by November or December. More White: "We’re always looking to the future. It’s not just five years; it’s ten years, it’s twenty years. ... For us, we’re thrilled with what the Schmidt will be and we’re very excited about that right now. We’re always having conversations, trying to garner donor interest and looking at what a future project might be." (link); New video on progress for UNLV's coming FB stadium to be shared with the Las Vegas Raiders.
