"Aging Pilot" presentation by Dr. Rizzo a great success
In the last year that I have been with VASI, I don't remember a better attended meeting. The meeting was held on a Saturday morning instead of the usual Wednesday night but many members felt that the topic was serious enough to shift their schedule to attend. Altogether we had 107 attendees who fought traffic and parking woes from the usual Saturday morning Farmers Market to attend. That coupled with the option to get Wings credit for attending, I'd say that the meeting was a great success.
Despite his impressive credentials, Dr. Rizzo was humorous, down to earth and his outstanding teaching skills showed when he simplified the complex physiology of the human body in terms that we all understood.
In short, he explained that our bodies evolved to last only about 20 years! So the attendees were all operating on borrowed time. He explained the impact of aging on our cardiovascular system, our sight and hearing. His message though was not a depressing one as much as one of awareness of those weakening systems that we rely on to fly and to do something about it. So a cautionary tale with a happy ending.
Diet and exercise (like we don't hear enough from our primary physician) is very important. But the way he explained, for example, how the 60% saturated fats in a fast food burger is like having sharp razors flowing through your veins, scratching the walls and resulting in plaque was enlightening and very easy to understand. I for one have been eating more broccoli since.
He then touched on the sensitive topic of when to "hang up the wings". A very tough question since flying is sometimes the only solace that some of us have from the everyday. He spoke of 92 year old flyers who eventually did give up flying but in his opinion they should have done it sooner and also we all know of the 92 year old who still flys vintage fighter jets and he is fine. So while the number matters what you did leading up to it matters even more.
In my opinion, the new FAA Medical BasicMed shifts the responsibility of being healthy-enough-to-fly on to us and extends the interval for most certificates. You can read more here. The pros and cons are a matter of controversy but with more freedom comes more responsibility.
Health maintenance was the primary focus of Dr. Rizzo's presentation - just like any other mechanical device that is past its time, eating right will reduce plaque and reduce cardiovascular risk, wearing ear protection all the time reduces hearing loss (he even did a hearing test live to prove it) and finally vision protection is a must. I know that I do some but not all of what he suggested and am relooking at my gear and so should you.
We thank Dr. Rizzo for a very educational and fun presentation on an important topic. We also thank Dave Wimberly, our President, for chasing Dr. Rizzo for months to have him schedule us in his busy schedule. He was chasing Dr. Rizzo as early as last Summer! Well done Dave.
As you can see putting such popular and relevant programs takes a lot of time and energy from the board. If you have ideas for hot topics or know someone who would make for a good speaker please pass along their info and your topic suggestions to me at info@veniceaviationsociety.org

SRQ ATC preferred procedures pamphlet from the November Meeting
Remember these guys? The Controllers from SRQ who did the presentation on Tampa TRACON as well as SRQ Tower.
It was another well attended Wings credit meeting and I had promised to send you a copy of their handout when I got it. So here it goes.
They gave out a handout that is shown here for procedures they are required the give out. But please remember that:
"The pilot in command of an aircraft is directly responsible for, and is the final authority as to, the operation of that aircraft. In an in-flight emergency requiring immediate action, the pilot in command may deviate from any rule of this part to the extent required to meet that emergency."
I uploaded it to the website on the links page for your future reference. To download the PDF of same click here.

Venice Fun Fliers
Forwarding an email from Art Chapman on Dennis King's request...
"Hello Venice Fun Fliers,
I am quite pleased with the favorable response to the formation of a group of fun seeking fliers. My hope is this group will foster stronger friendships among local pilots through monthly fly outs.
Our loosely organized group of pilots will get together on the fourth Saturday of each month to fly to an interesting destination in Florida. We will fly on VFR days, only. If the weather is not forecast to be favorable, the flight will be postponed until the following Saturday. Flight destinations will be announced at monthly EAA chapter 1285 meetings and through emails to our members as well as others in the Venice Airport Pilot Community.
Group members are encouraged to bring spouses, family members, and friends on our flights. Flying solo is perfectly acceptable, but sharing the joy of flight and visiting fun destinations is what our group is about.
This month’s inaugural flight will be on Saturday January 26th. We will fly to Everglades City ( X01 ). The flight is 92nm miles south along Florida’s beautiful west coast. I will try to arrange rides into town where we will eat lunch at the Rod and Gun Club. Also, the airport has bicycles for use or it’s a short walk of a mile or so to town.
On the morning of the flight, we will meet in the airport administration building, on the second floor, to preflight the trip. Please be there Saturday, January 26, at 9:00am for a short meeting before we depart.
Please email me before the flight so I have an idea of how many are going. My email is: artchapman5136@yahoo.com
Get ready for a fun flight with family and friends.
Art Chapman"

Wings of Freedom visit Venice (January 31st - February 3)
Our fellow VASI member and former EAA president, Dennis Flood, is again hosting and organizing this very cool event. He will no doubt need volunteers as it is a large scale operation. I volunteered to help direct traffic last year and it was great fun. I even got a tip from one of the visitors! Please reach out to Dennis if you can help out.

Young Eagles need EAA volunteers for tomorrow (Saturday Januray 19th)
Hello EAA'rs,
Don't forget this Saturday, the 19th, is our Young Eagles Rally at the old Flight School, 220 Airport Road. We need ground and pilot volunteers, or just stop by and enjoy some camaraderie!
For Pilots, we need airplanes on the ramp at 8:30 AM, with the pilot briefing at 8:45. Rides are from 9- Noon, or until every kid has had a ride.
If you received an email notice from EAA to update your Young Eagles background check, please take a few minutes to do this.
I'm going to miss this fun event, have fun!
Dennis

16 years- 5 VASI Presidents. Committed to support of the Venice Municipal Airport.
In the short time that I have known Paul and Dave, I can safely say that leading VASI is almost a full time job and I'm sure that it was not any easier in years past. Here are four of the past presidents and our current president Dave Wimberly. If you see them around the airport please give them a big thank you.
