Pacific Partnership to End Violence against Women and Girls launched in Fiji and Tonga
November, December 2018
The Pacific Partnership brings together national governments, multilateral and regional agencies and civil society organisations to promote gender equality, prevent violence against women and girls and increase access to quality
response services for survivors. 
The project was launched in Fiji and Tonga during the 16 Days of Activism in December 2018.

Vanuatu Skills Partnership: partnerships for inclusion, empowerment
1 and 15 January 2019
Pacific Women supports the Vanuatu Skills Partnership to provide training for women with a focus on tourism and agribusiness. Project participant, artisan Trudy Kalotiti, supports other local artisans in the handicraft sector to generate income and help their families and communities. Read her story here.
Vanuatu Skills Partnership has a disability inclusion policy and is mainstreaming disability inclusion in its training programs.

Skills training empowers Tongan women to generate incomes
22 January 2019
Nine participants in a pilot women’s economic empowerment project in Tonga recently received certificates of completion, presented by Australia’s Ambassador for Women and Girls,
the Honourable Dr Sharman Stone. Participant Kesaia Niu says the project, run by the Tonga National Centre for Women and Children, is already changing her life.

A dream from the heart
7 December 2018
UN Women launched the ‘My Dream’ music video to mark Papua New Guinea’s 20 Days of Human Rights Activism. Composed by Jobecca Watinga, the song won a competition run by UN Women as part of the Sanap Wantaim (‘Stand Together’) campaign to promote Port Moresby as a safe city for women and girls.

Progress in gender equality in the workplace in Solomon Islands

A new report shows 15 of the largest businesses in Solomon Islands
are pioneering measures to promote gender diverse workplaces, including new ways to support employees affected by violence.  Read more.
16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence 2018
Australia’s Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade marked the 16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence in 2018 by sharing a number of stories on how Australia is addressing violence against women and girls globally. Local action, global movements: WUTMI commemorates the 16 Days

Women United Together Marshall Islands (WUTMI) joined government ministries, local civil society organisations and the global gender equality movement in the commemoration of the 16 Days of Activism against Gender-Based Violence in November and December 2018.

FHI  360 uses innovative approaches to address violence against women in Western Highlands and West Sepik provinces in Papua New Guinea. The project works to facilitate decisive action at the individual, relationship, community, institutional and societal levels to lead to positive changes in behaviours and practices to end violence against women.

Research | From the Region

Promising findings from research into Lae protection orders 
This report features an analysis of data spanning almost three years from the Femili PNG Case Management Centre in Lae, Papua New Guinea. The research found the uptake of interim protection orders is increasing and the time taken to issue family protection orders is decreasing on average. However, further work is recommended to improve the safety of survivors of family and domestic violence. Click here to read the report.
Exploring the impact of family and sexual violence on families and children
Researchers from Australia and PNG have explored the connections between the quality of support given to women survivors of family and sexual violence, and their children’s wellbeing and opportunities for education. The research by Australian National University, University of Papua New Guinea and the Lae University of Technology, was conducted in Lae in April 2018. Expressions of interest for the Pacific Women Regional Learning Forum on Women's Economic Empowerment - closing soon!
Pacific Women is seeking expressions of interest for the program’s Regional Learning Forum on Women's Economic Empowerment. The theme of the forum is ‘Recognising and achieving women’s economic empowerment in the Pacific Island region: what needs to change’. 

Pacific Women encourages applications from:
  • participants (individuals or organisations who wish to apply for travel support to attend the forum);
  • panel members and speakers (who have research and lessons to share); and 
  • practitioners (for skills and lesson sharing through a ‘skills-building’ session). 
Women and men of all diversities are encouraged to apply.
