Volunteer Of The Year Award - Now open!

The Gardens Trust couldn’t keep doing what we do without the help of our wonderful volunteers. Do you know someone who has made a real difference or gone that extra mile with their volunteering? If so, now’s your chance to nominate them for The GT Volunteer of the Year Award 2019!

This annual award celebrates the efforts of people who have made a special contribution to the work of the Gardens Trust or their County or Country Gardens Trust. It honours the volunteers whose efforts have greatly added to the conservation, enjoyment and understanding of designed gardens, parks and landscapes. The winner of the award will be announced at the Gardens Trust AGM in September. So if there’s someone you’d like to nominate, or to find out about the award and our previous winners (pictured), there is more information on the website here.

Come to our spring GT events

London lectures, spring garden trips & conference update

We have an exciting series of lectures and events lined up for you this spring, with the next one being just next week, on 20 February, when Professor Simon Hiscock will speak on the Oxford Botanic Garden, reflecting on the history, status and future challenges faced by the oldest botanic garden in the UK.

This is followed by a lecture on Castle Howard (above) by Dr Sally Jeffery on 6 March. She will talk about her research into historic designs for the naturalistic woodland garden there, based on sketches found at Wilton House and attributed to Hawksmoor. It’s sure to be an interesting evening and a warm up for the visit she is leading in July. Later in March Dr Barbara Simms will be looking into John Brookes and his landscape legacy. You can either book online or pay on the door for these lectures.

Booking is open for the Christopher Thacker Tribute to be held at on 19 March and see below for a chance to hear about new research on Hagley Park. Please note that the date of the Bath lecture has changed to 15 May. And there are just a few remaining tickets for Secrets and Scandal at West Wycombe Park on Thursday 30 May led by National Trust historian Richard Wheeler.

GT Annual Conference

Bookings for the annual conference at the Queen’s College Oxford, from 6-8 September, open on Monday 18 February. Treats include an exclusive visit to William Mason’s iconic flower garden at Nuneham,  and Robin Lane Fox of the FT speaking at the Gala Dinner. More

Research

Hagley Park has now been designated a Grade I registered park of exceptional national importance and Joe Hawkins is currently writing up his PhD thesis on the park. Join us for a fascinating lecture in Birmingham on 17 April to find out more before we visit on 1/2 May.

Conserve

Allotments beside Syon Park were at risk from a proposed housing development. The developer appealed against Hounslow's refusal of planning permission, but their appeal was dismissed. The result  recognises the importance of both the community allotments  and the Grade I-listed Syon Park. More

Campaign

Don't forget that the the closing date for the Sharing Landscapes competition is 30 March. The best idea for attracting new audiences to your site will win a bust of Repton. Our HLF-funded Sharing Repton: Historic Landscapes for all project is now in its final year, with more events led by CGT volunteers.
