Closing Notifications
I recently received a message from Remind that Verizon customers will no longer be able to receive notifications on their phones. However, you can avoid disruptions by downloading the mobile app or enabling email notifications

You can also receive notifications through the KCRG News app. Simply download the KCRG News app,  > Open, > Settings, > Closings, choose Independence schools. It took me less than 5 minutes to download this free notification service.

... how generous the St. John School community is. Our church is participating in a clothing drive for the Society of St. Vincent de Paul. Adult and children's used, but in good condition, clothing will be collected through Catholic Schools Week and be delivered to those in need in Northeast Iowa. You can deliver the clothing in person or send it to school with your student.

KMCH

Rob Edwards from KCMH radio station 94.7 was here to record several of our students for Catholic Schools Week. Please listen to their station from Jan. 26 - Feb. 2 to hear their recordings.

High RSV activity in Iowa
The annual respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) season occurs fall through spring in most regions of the U.S. and Iowa has seen a recent increase in RSV activity throughout the state. Over the past four weeks, 872 positive RSV cases were reported in Iowa. RSV is a common virus that usually causes mild, cold-like symptoms from which most people recover in under two weeks. RSV can also cause lower respiratory infections like bronchiolitis and pneumonia. 1-2% of children younger than 6 months of age with RSV infection may need to be hospitalized.

Symptoms of RSV infection usually include:
Runny nose, decrease in appetite, coughing, sneezing, fever & wheezing.
These symptoms usually appear in stages and not all at once. In very young infants with RSV, the only symptoms may be irritability, decreased activity, and breathing difficulties.

RSV can spread when an infected person coughs or sneezes. You can get infected if you get droplets from the cough or sneeze in your eyes, nose, or mouth, or if you touch a surface that has the virus on it, like a doorknob.  People infected with RSV are usually contagious for 3 to 8 days. However, some infants and people with weakened immune systems, can continue to spread the virus even after they stop showing symptoms, for as long as 4 weeks.  RSV can survive for many hours on hard surfaces such as tables and crib rails.

Prevention of the spread of RSV:
·  Cover your coughs and sneezes with a tissue, or the inside of your elbow and not your hands
·  Wash your hands often with soap and water, scrubbing for 20 seconds
·  Avoid close contact, such as kissing, shaking hands, and sharing cups and eating utensils, with others
·  Clean and disinfect contaminated surfaces to help stop the spread of RSV
Exclusion
A child with RSV should be temporarily excluded from child care when the child’s illness causes one or more of the following:
·  Prevents the child from participating comfortably in activities
·  A need for care that is greater than the staff can provide without compromising the health and safety of other children
·  The child has breathing difficulties
·  Fever

STO
The School Tuition Organization is now accepting financial aid applications (online only). This is the website link https://online.factsmgt.com/aid. A significant change for the 2019-20 school year is that all families that file taxes will be required to submit their 2018 tax return. In order to give families more time to complete and upload their 2018 tax return, the deadline for round #1 has been extended to April 15. Important: You must apply for  STO in order to qualify for Kucera Grant and local tuition assistance scholarship money.

Tuition Tax Credit
The updated information and form for for tuition tax credit can be accessed by clicking HERE. The credit is equal to 25% of the first $1,000 of the total for each child. The maximum credit per child is $250.

Lunch Balances
Just a reminder to parents that lunch notices are not being sent home this year.  PowerSchool allows you to check your balance online as well as receive email notifications when balances are low.  We have several accounts that are in need of attention.  If you have any questions, please call the school.  Thank you!
