Posing with some of my undergraduate fiber art at my BFA exhibition: 2 silkscreened monoprints, plus, I'm wearing a jacket I sewed from fabric I wove.

Chapter two

A few months ago, I began the story of, "Anne's circuitous journey from there to here." Click here to read chapter one. This next chapter is about the literal journey I took from there (Illinois) to here (Colorado).

Along with the metals classes I took at Northern Illinois University to complete my BFA, I also took quite a few fiber art classes, which included weaving, embroidery, and printing on fabric. While I enjoyed the exciting processes of working with metal, the soft, comforting texture of fibers really called to me. I probably would have changed my major to fiber art had I discovered the medium sooner. But it was time for me to go. So I played it as it laid and graduated with my declared major of metalwork and jewelry.

While in that liminal space between my emergence from 18 years of school and my entrance into the full time work force, I felt the need to explore a little bit of life with less structure. I decided to take a walkabout (in my pickup truck).

While visiting Niagara Falls, I noticed that everybody else had family and friends to take pictures of each other. My travel companion was a little stuffed rabbit I called Hoppin' John. He's pretty photogenic, don't you think?
I set my destination for Niagara Falls. Leaving from Illinois, I headed east, through the Midwest and southern Ontario until I arrived at the falls. That, my friends, was the extent of my plan. But I still had some money left to spend! So I followed my momentum and headed southeast, eventually landing in Key West, Florida. From there, I made my way up the gulf side of Florida and headed west to Baton Rouge, Louisiana, where 2 of my brothers were living at the time.

At some point along the way, I spoke with a college friend who encouraged me to move out to Loveland, Colorado. He assured me there was a job available in a bronze foundry where he was working. That sounded like a fine idea. So that's what I did.

The next chapter in my artistic journey will tell the story of my increasing awareness of how much I need art to be my life, not a mere dalliance.
Here's to finding your passion👉Happy 2019, everybody!
