Welcoming students from 29 different nationalities this winter term, you may have heard Niagara College further diversified its number of language skills programs offered through the School of English Language Studies with the launch of the English Language and Culture (ELC) program’s first winter intake, taking place January 13 to February 8. In addition to the newly offered option for students to enroll in the winter months, the ELC program is also comprised of what was previously referred to as the Summer English program.
“The ELC program, now with its multiple intakes, provides students from all over the world even more opportunity to experience a four week sneak peek into what studying at Niagara College and Canada is like,” said Guhan Ilgazli, Associate Dean of NC’s School of English Language Studies. “Aligned with NC’s Strategic Plan, the ELC program blends language education and development with an understanding of Canadian culture, inevitably improving learners’ inter-cultural communication and competency.”
These year-round opportunities allow individuals more flexibility in attending Niagara College as students in other parts of the world have different academic calendars than in Canada. It also allows students to gain exposure to the Canadian secondary system prior to enrolling in a post-secondary program.
Students are also now able to experience why Canada is referred to as the Great White North; ELC program teaches students to communicate in English effectively by incorporating diverse learning methods, such as excursions and social activities, encouraging students to apply English skills in real-life settings.
Students are able to strengthen their cultural competencies and gain a better understanding of Canadian culture as well as various other cultures from around the world. Social and cultural activities are geared towards highlighting the Niagara region and other parts of Southern Ontario.
Kim Yeojin from Jeju Island, South Korea expressed she was excited to be studying in Canada and outside of the classroom, she was most looking forward to the opportunity to ski, having previously only tried the sport once.
Students studying in ELC program’s winter intake can look forward to attending the Winter Festival of Lights, tobogganing, curling, skiing, a day trip to Toronto and attending an Ontario Hockey League game applauding the Niagara Ice dogs as well as other activities
The first cohort of the ELC program welcomed 36 students from South Korea with 30 students from Jeju National University, five students from Inje University and one student from Kumoh National University. School of English Language Studies programs, such as the ECL program, are made possible through NC’s partnerships with various universities and colleges around the world. The College also offers unique customizable English programs to groups that allow its global partners to additionally gain exposure to Canadian businesses specific to their field of study through its strong industry ties.
NC is a front runner in the industry for developing internationally specialized programs marketed around the world and for delivering diverse programs geared towards the development of English language skills that are offered year round with flexible start dates available. Reoccurring Niagara College programs offered include its English for Academic Preparation (EAP), Short-Term EAP, Academic English for College and University (AECUS), and now ELC.
Most students enrolled in NC’s School of English Language Studies are only just beginning of their global educational adventure and for many, it is just a starting point of their #myNCstory.

- Joanne Maltby started her Master of Education in Educational Leadership with Yorkville University.
- Maxine (Top Left Image) brought in her 2019 year in Ecuador, eating 12 grapes in 60 seconds - each one representing a wish she has for 2019. She also had to run around the block, carrying her empty luggage in one hand and her 12 grapes, to represent a year of travel around the world before the clock strikes midnight. Paper mache sculptures are lit on fire at every block to burn past misfortunes in true Ecuadorian tradition as well as approximately 25 minutes of fireworks.
- Martina has changed her name and is now listed as Martina Finnegan.
- Nancy Pye rang in the New Year down south in Cuba! One of her vacation highlights was spending a day touring the surrounding small towns in a 1927 Ford Model A (Top Right Image).
- Diana Dusome’s New Year’s resolution is to be more grateful and appreciative. Before going to bed each night, she and her family share with each other three things they are thankful for, what the best part of their day was and what would they have done differently.

Message from Dan Patterson: Record enrolment to start the Winter 2019 term
I’d like to wish all staff and faculty a Happy New Year. I hope you had a restful and enjoyable holiday break and, like me, you’ve returned to the college re-energized and excited for the year ahead.
The Winter 2019 term includes over 2,000 students starting their programs, joining us to live the Niagara College experience. I’d like to send my sincere thanks and admiration to all our staff, faculty and student leaders who have gone above and beyond to offer our new students a warm NC welcome, while making sure that they get a fun and positive start to college life – both inside and outside the classroom.
Congratulations to our Niagara College Student Administrative Council, who have lined up an extraordinary set of events and activities to kick off the Winter term. This past week the NOTL Campus courtyard was transformed into “SAC-afeller Square,” complete with a skating rink, hot chocolate and soup, and other activities, giving many of our international students a truly Canadian welcome. The party continues in Welland on Jan. 11 as well, with the campus set to welcome students to a winter wonderland with music, food and Instagram-worthy photo spots in the Courtyard.

CFWI welcomes Emily Stewart as assistant to the dean
Message from CFWI Dean Craig Youdale:
On behalf of the entire Canadian Food and Wine Institute, I’m pleased to welcome Emily Stewart as the CFWI’s new assistant to the dean. Emily will be responsible for a myriad of duties, and will be the main administrative contact for myself, and for the CFWI.
Emily is new to Niagara College, having recently moved back to Niagara from BC. She has experience in the non-profit sector, specifically in labour market program development, administration, training and career counselling. Emily also has several years of experience in the hospitality sector, having worked in various supervisory roles within retirement facilities and restaurants.
Emily has completed a diploma in Tourism and Recreation Management, a certificate in Career Counselling, and is continuing to work towards completing her undergraduate degree online. In her spare time, she enjoys playing hockey and hanging out with her miniature schnauzer, Jett.

New role, campus for FMS's Tom Mussari
A message from Ralph Scholz, director, Facilities Management Services:
I’m pleased to welcome Tom Mussari to the position of manager of maintenance and operations at the Niagara-on-the-Lake Campus, starting January 28, 2019. Tom joined the College in the position of Project Manager and Contract Administrator in the FMS Planning and Development Office in 2016, where he was instrumental in managing such projects as the construction of the Distillery, Green Automotive Building, and the Cannabis Production Facility.
Prior to joining the Niagara College team, Tom served in a variety of positions over a 26 year period with the City of Niagara Falls, including risk manager, manager of roads, manager of facilities/operations and site plan inspector.
Tom will be based out of the NOTL Campus FMS area and will be reachable at extension 4442.
