Old City Hall Demolition

Work crews will install fencing around Windsor’s Old City Hall this month as they continue to prepare the site for eventual demolition.  The fencing will cause some re-routing of pedestrian access to ensure a safe barrier is in place for the work area, and we apologize for the temporary inconvenience.

The old City Hall building was built in 1956 and contains asbestos. The initial stage of the demolition will see hazardous waste removed according to safety regulations, including regular air quality monitoring. Equipment will also be installed to ensure any vibrations and dust caused by demolition work remains within acceptable levels.

Once the hazardous material is safely removed, the building will be knocked down and remaining materials recycled. The City is hoping to achieve an 80% to 85% recycle rate with materials.  This will save money on backfill, as well as the cost that would have been involved to transfer material to the landfill.  The final demolition work is anticipated to be complete by August 2019.

Budget Environmental Disposal Inc. is the demolition contractor for the project. The City’s Consultant, DST Consulting Engineers Inc. (DST) will administer the project.

Project updates will be shared on the City of Windsor’s social media and webpage.  Any questions can be directed to City of Windsor Project Administrator, Wadah Al-Yassiri at (519) 255-6100 ext. 6494.

Happy 5th Birthday Adventure Bay!

Adventure Bay Family Water Park Presented by WFCU Credit Union celebrated it's 5th birthday on January 19, 2019, and we threw a good old fashioned birthday party to celebrate. Cupcakes, activities and more were enjoyed by our visitors, and Mayor Drew Dilkens brought special greetings before cutting the ceremonial cake with Beth Ann Prince from WFCU Credit Union, Annika Konopaski, winner of the water park's original naming contest and Kamilla Merrow, winner of the 2017 naming contest for our mascot, Youcan the Toucan.

"Today is an exciting day: it's the fifth anniversary of Adventure Bay," said Mayor Drew Dilkens. "Since we opened the doors five years ago, over 630,000 people have walked through those doors, so it's being very well used." Thank you to all of our visitors and congratulations Adventure Bay. Happy Birthday!

Transit Windsor New Tunnel and Combo Smart Pass

Transit Windsor (TW) will be launching their first phase of a pilot project to implement smart media to the public. Currently, bus pass holders can use a calendar-based magnetic pass (swiped into the fare box) that is valid for that calendar month only and must be purchased one month at a time.

Starting January 15, 2019 Transit Windsor will be eliminating the magnetic pass for Tunnel and Combo passes and replace those with a new reloadable TW Tunnel and Combo smart pass. The passes will be time based and will be preloaded with 30 days. The cost will remain the same for Tunnel pass at $95.70 and the Combo pass at $157.00. January Tunnel and Combo magnetic passes will still be valid until January 31, 2019. Student, Adult and Senior calendar magnetic passes, as well as paper tickets, including Tunnel will still be available and valid. Paying cash with exact fare of $3 on city service and $5 tunnel service on the bus will also remain available for our riders.

Here is how Transit Windsor is planning on enhancing our riders’ experience: the new TW Tunnel and Combo smart pass will be a reloadable smart pass that can be used over and over again and will be activated the first time they tap the pass on the fare box reader on the bus. The pass will now be valid for the next 30 days. The benefit is that you can reload your pass at your convenience either at the Downtown Terminal 300 Chatham Street West, 7am to 9 pm  or the Transit Centre 3700 North Service Road 8:30am to 4 pm. The pass can be reloaded in increments of 15 or 30 days. This will eliminate the need to rush in at the end of the month to purchase your next month pass and most importantly help you avoid waiting in line.

Transit Windsor’s goal is to eliminate all magnetic passes and paper tickets and replace them with the smart pass over time. Once this has been implemented, it will provide us the opportunity to move to the next phase and final stages, including additional locations to reload your pass and finally mobile ticketing. Mobile ticketing would allow our riders even more opportunities to reload their Smart Pass either online or using their smart phone itself as their bus pass.

Simply tap and ride.

Bright Lights Windsor Shines

What makes for a great family tradition is how it gets better every year, and the second annual Bright Lights Windsor definitely delivered this past holiday season. Record crowds attended night after night, and organizers estimate just over 100,000 people visited from December 7 to January 6. Social media buzzed with #BrightLightsWindsor hashtagged photos of joyous families, wedding engagements, the spectacular lights themselves and more. Here are some of the highlights. See you next year!

If you visited us at Bright Lights Windsor, we'd love to hear your feedback. Please take a few moments to give us your thoughts here:
Pictured is a falcon mummy that is from Ptolemaic period, 332-30 B.C. It was collected by the Sulman Family c. 1910 and is on loan to Museum Windsor from the Chatham Kent Museum.

This mummy will be on display at the Chimczuk Museum along side a travelling exhibit, Egypt: Gift of the Nile, which comes to us from the Royal Ontario Museum. This exhibit will be open for the Museum’s Heritage Day celebrations on Saturday February 16 through to May 25.

Feedback Wanted on Sandwich Town Murals

Windsor’s Culture department is looking for feedback on a series of Sandwich Town murals.

The 16 murals honouring significant black leaders in our community were originally exhibited along the exterior wall of a grocery store on Sandwich Street. However, the grocery store has since been sold, and the murals were removed and placed in storage for safekeeping.

The City of Windsor is looking for the community’s feedback on how to proceed.

Take our Sandwich Murals Survey

This survey will be available for comments until February 11, 2019.

Two open houses will also be held: Wednesday January 23, 2019 from 5 pm to 7 pm and again on Saturday February 2, 2019 from 10 am to noon.

Both open houses will take place at the Mackenzie Hall Cultural Centre, 3277 Sandwich Street.

We invite you to discuss your thoughts and opinions with administration. Should you have any questions but are unable to attend either open house, please email us at culturalaffairs@citywindsor.ca.

Making an Emergency Preparedness Kit

Are you ready? If an emergency happens in your community, it may take some time for emergency workers to reach you. You should be prepared to take care of yourself and your family for a minimum of 72 hours by following these three basic steps; make a plan, build a kit, and stay informed.

Do you have an emergency preparedness kit? Each month we will tell you which items to add to your kit.

January: Storage container, flashlight, battery powered or hand crank radio.

It’s a good idea to ensure you have a car emergency preparedness kit, especially in the winter when snow and ice storms can leave you trapped in your vehicle unexpectedly. Include jumper cables, sand, a flashlight, warm clothes, blankets, bottled water, and non-perishable snacks.

January Safety Tip: Always keep your gas tank at least half-full, especially in the winter months. This will ensure you are always prepared should you need to evacuate the area, avoid freezing in fuel lines, and ensure you have plenty of gasoline to help warm your car in case you get stranded by the side of the road.
