Hello Water Warriors!
We need a full house of citizens who want a stop to the export of water, at the Strathcona Regional District Board Meeting, Thursday, Jan 24, 12:30 pm (this Thursday).
Bruce Gibbons, Merville Water Guardians is on the Agenda to speak.
On Monday, January 7th, City of Courtenay Council passed a resolution directing staff to prepare a bylaw that would prohibit bottling of groundwater in Courtenay. Passage of the bylaw will come back to Council for voting on. The City of Courtenay is supporting the SRD resolution. The Village of Cumberland has approved a motion to amend their bylaws to prohibit bottling of groundwater in all their zones. We are having great success so far but need to show strong support for these bylaws.
Read about shrinking groundwater resources here.
Now is the time to show solidarity behind the restriction of the sale of our precious groundwater. Please come and show your support!

Say NO to the Pacific Herring Roe Fishery
Conservancy Hornby Island is requesting the federal government to shut down the Pacific herring roe fishery planned for March 2019. Again this year, Fisheries and Oceans Canada (DFO) is preparing to approve the catch of approximately 200 million spawning herring in the Georgia Strait - the last viable herring roe fishery on the coast - without considering what impact this may have on all the other sea creatures who rely on this one species of forage fish.
To sign the petition to MP Jonathan Wilkinson, Minister, Fisheries and Oceans Canada go here.

PACIFIC HERRING – IN DIRE STRAITS? The annual herring spawn in the Strait of Georgia around Hornby and Denman Islands is the last of six major herring spawns on the west coast of Canada - the rest were overfished.
