ALIA is pleased to announce that Viv Barton, Service Lead - Libraries & Lifelong Learning, City of Stirling, been formally elected to the position of Vice-President (President-elect). Nominations for the two general Director positions have been received from three ALIA Members:

ALIA is pleased to announce that the ALIA 2019 Library Design Awards will be presented by His Excellency the Honourable Paul de Jersey AC, Governor of Queensland. This event is part of the Asia Pacific Architecture Forum, an initiative of Architecture Media and the State Library of QueenslandVoting for the 2019 Library Design Awards for the Members' Choice award closes on 31 January 2019. 

ALIA is offering two scholarships to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students planning to start studying library and information science in 2019. Applications close on 3 February 2019. Enquiries should be directed to education@alia.org.au.

Don't forget to engage with the first #AusLibChat of 2019 on 9:00pm AEDT on 5 February. The topic is 'Are Librarians Trusted Professionals?' The topic coincides with the ALIA FAIR Truth, Integrity, Knowledge campaign. For more information visit the website.

The ALIA LIS Education, Skills and Employment Trend Report indicates an increase of 400 jobs in the sector by 2023, with the number of librarians increasing by 1,000 and the number of library technician and library assistant positions predicted to reduce by 300 each over the same time period. ALIA has made the article by Jessica Coates' 'More copyright reform for libraries in 2019' from the January/February issue of INCITE freely accessible. You can read the article online. 

ALIA will submit a report for the upcoming inquiry into mental health. The inquiry will examine the effect of mental health on people’s ability to participate in and prosper in the community and workplace, and the effects it has more generally on the Australian economy. To help us promote the work that libraries do in this space, please send through relevant program information we can reference in our submission to advocacy@alia.org.au by 31 January 2019. 

To recognise their role in enacting legislative change to Australian copyright ALIA sent thank you cards to all Australian Federal politicians. A big thank you is also due to the Australian Libraries Copyright Committee and everyone who was involved in the #CookingForCopyright campaign.

In 2018, ALIA organised seven Leadership & Innovation Forums across Australia. The theme was ‘Meaningful and respectful engagement with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander knowledge, culture and heritage – what more do we need to do?’ You can read the report detailing outcomes of the forums online. 

The call for proposals for the ALIA Library and Information Technicians' Symposium 2019 have been extended to 17 February 2019. 

The Australian Booksellers Association, the Australian Library and Information Association, the Australian Publishers Association and the Australian Society of Authors have created an update on the current status of the work of Books Create Australia. You can read the update online.

In 2018, the ALIA Interlibrary Lending Advisory Committee surveyed 115 library and information professionals about the current state of interlibrary loans in Australia. You can read the results online. 

In 2017, ALIA produced a report on Australian libraries: the digital economy within everyone's reach in response to the Australian Government's Digital economy: opening the conversation. ALIA's report was the seventh most popular of its kind on apo.org.au in 2018. 

The Department of Industry, Innovation and Science has released a report on Australia's Tech Future. The report includes a case study from ALIA's Digital Economy submission. 

The theme for Safer Internet Day 2019 is 'together for a better internet'. This day celebrates the aim of communally producing a safer and more effective internet. You can download free resources for the day. The Office of the eSafety Commissioner is running the event.

Public library news

Green Square Library in Sydney has won the Architectural Review Library Award 2018. The library was judged against other libraries and similar buildings from around the world built since 2013.

The Digital Springboard program is seeking partners for its initiative aimed at assisting people in learning digital skills. Libraries can apply for free on the website to become a partner. 

The Australian Government is seeking responses to a review of the future of the Australian Public Service.

Libraries have evolved and developed alongside technology, you can watch ABC's 7:30 Report on the topic that interviews ALIA CEO Sue McKerracher. The timestamp for the story is 24:00 to 29:00. 

On 1 January 2019, hundreds of previously copyright protected works have entered the public domain as a result of legislative changes. Works that are now in the public domain include Captain Cook’s diaries and Jane Austen’s correspondence, both held at the National Library of Australia

2019 is the UNESCO International Year of Indigenous Languages and there are many ways that libraries can get involved, from highlighting Indigenous works in your library’s collection to hosting talks from local members of Indigenous communities. Find out more about the year.

INTERNATIONAL

IFLA is calling for nominations for people who have made an outstanding contribution to IFLA or international librarianship in 2018. All authorised representatives of Members and Personal Affiliates can nominate until 22 February 2019. 

OCLC is seeking responses for a survey on open content. The survey is open to all libraries, and aims to engage a global audience of librarians and information professionals, to map and align open content activities. The survey closes 31 January 2019. 

Library fines have been in the news recently with library fines being scrapped throughout the Republic of Ireland as part of a plan to double library memberships to 1.5 million over the next five years. While in the US, Houston County Library have abolished library fines across its five public libraries for its children's and youth materials and San Francisco Public Library are looking into abolishing library fines. In the UK, Halton Borough Council is abolishing library fines in an attempt to encourage more people to use its four libraries, while libraries in Essex County are owed more than £300,000 in overdue library fines.

Architect Atelier Masomi has breathed new life into a derelict mosque in rural Dandaji, Niger, by building the community's new library in its walls. The new library will sit across from the town's new mosque, and was built after suggestions from members of the community. 

The architect company Farming Architects has created an environmentally friendly library in Hanoi, Vietnam. The library uses aquaponics (a mix of aquaculture and hydroponics) to teach children about self-sustaining ecosystems.

LocHal is a converted locomotive hall in Tilburg, the Netherlands, and it houses a range of services for the city including a library. The modular space can be rearranged depending on the needs of the patrons and features a children's library themed around the nations popular theme park, Efteling.

In 2018, 65 public libraries checked out more than 1 million items each. These libraries include the Toronto Public Library, Canada; the Chicago Public Library, US; and the Mid-Continent Public Library, US. You can read the full list online.

Australian Capital Territory


In January, Libraries ACT extended its opening hours at six branches on Thursday 17 and Friday 18 January, to enable Canberrans to escape the extreme heat. 

A partnership between Libraries ACT and Nutrition Australia ACT, (which began with as a pilot program in 2017) has been further developed for 2019. The healthy food program will be expanded to reach a wider group of families.

On 21 January 2019, the ACT Heritage Library reopened in newly refurbished premises. The library moved from the first floor in the Woden Public Library to a separate facility in Fyshwick.

Libraries ACT has revealed its most popular borrowed books which include The Subtle Art of Not Giving a F---: A counterintuitive approach to living a good life by Mark Manson and The Trauma Cleaner: One woman’s extraordinary life in death, decay and disaster by Sarah Krasnostein. 
 

New South Wales


Robert Knight talked about the Renew Our Libraries campaign during an interview with ABC Sydney. The timestamp is from about 1:01:00 to 1:12:00.

The NSW Public Library Association (NSWPLA)  Executive will meet in Sydney, NSW, on 25 March 2019. As the NSW state election will have occurred prior to the meeting the focus will be on the activation of funding for the Renew Our Libraries campaign.

A number of NSWPLA awards were presented at the 2018 SWITCH conference including the Kath Knowles Emerging Leaders Award

Orange City Library, NSW, continues to be a popular community hub that provides a valuable service to the community. Over the course of 2018 the library lent out more than 170,000 physical items

An overhaul and refurbishment has been proposed for Lake Macquarie Libraries, NSW. The proposed five year plan could affect eight out of the ten libraries in the council area. The draft plan is available for comment until 24 February 2019. 

Vision Australia is running a campaign to safeguard NSW library services for people who are blind or have low vision and those with a print disability. You can learn more about the campaign online. 
 

Northern Territory 


ALIA has received an anonymous donation to make a $1,500 grant available for an ALIA Member from the Northern Territory to attend the New Librarians’ Symposium 2019 (NLS9) in Adelaide. To apply, email events@alia.org.au saying how attending NLS9 will enhance your career development, along with a letter from your employer supporting your application for the grant. Applications close 30 April 2019. 


South Australia


City of Victor Harbor, SA, is calling for community feedback on its library services. People can share their views by completing an online survey or in hard copy at the library. The deadline for feedback is 1 February 2019. 


Victoria


More than 20 local launches of the Libraries Change Lives campaign have been conducted, it has enjoyed strong media coverage including a story on ABC’s 7.30 Report featuring Melton and Nunawading library services. 

The business case for the Victorian Public Libraries Conference was endorsed by Public Libraries Victoria (PLV)  and will be held on September 16–17 at the Arts Centre Melbourne. The theme will be Libraries Change Lives and the call for papers will be issued shortly with interstate visitors more than are welcome.

The Hon. Adem Somyurek has been named as the new Victorian Minister for Local Government. Minister Somyurek has public libraries in his portfolio. 
 
Selection of the successful tender is nearly complete for the state-wide Library Management System tender. PLV has under taken a substantive review of the existing four year plan. Key strategic thinking is complete and the final draft will be circulated to PLV Members and key stakeholders for comment in early February.
 

Western Australia


Public Libraries Western Australia has an upcoming event 'Library Design: Creating Spaces to Support Future Communities'. The event is running on 8 February 2019, for more information see the website. If you're interested in library design you can also register for ALIA's 'Great Library Spaces' course, registrations close 12 February 2019. 
Campaigns, events and programming ideas
The ALIA Campaigns and Events page provides ideas for all year round advocacy. These campaigns and events give you the opportunity to run fun, informative activities in the library, online and through social media every month of the year.
Professional learning
ALIA Members are able to freely access a collection of LIS ebooks from EBL and can investigate the Public Library Specialisation of the ALIA PD Scheme that recognises the specific skills needed for the public library sector. Members can also sign up for the monthly PD Postings enewsletter.
