February
Sermon Series

Have you ever put on a fake smile or been “politically correct” to avoid conflict? We’ve all been in that moment when a person was “being nice” to us, but it didn’t feel nice. As we begin the new year, we’re going to commit to going deeper than simply being nice to one another.

"Stop Being Nice"
Sermon Series

February 3 - Be Kind
Ephesians 4:29-32

Being nice and being kind are two different things. Being nice comes across on the surface, but kindness comes out of the depths of our hearts. To be kind is a reflection of God’s action.

February 10 - Be Joyful
John 15:1-11

There is a difference between happiness and joy. Happiness tends to happen to us, while joy is a choice we make and a way of being in the world. While happiness is based on circumstances; joy is an assurance of God with us.

February 17 - Be Peaceful
Philippians 4:4-9

Peace is not the absence of conflict. Biblical peace stems from shalom, finding harmony between people. We are called to be peacemakers in a divided world. Peace is an action which requires us to week justice and harmony.

February 24 - Be Loving
1 Corinthians 13:1-13

Love sounds like a mushy, fluffy word; but real love is anything but touchy-feely. While the Bible’s famous passage about love (1 Corinthians 13) may be read often at weddings, the writer was really trying to capture the depth and struggle to love fully. We’ll wrap up “Stop Being Nice” by doing the hard work of really loving others.

You may see Sue Hayward or Karen Stillwell to purchase the shopping cards on any Sunday.

Sunday, January 27

Winter is here!  Temperatures are dropping!  Soups on!

More than 25 years ago , the Souper Bowl of Caring began with a simple prayer from a single youth group:

"Lord, as we enjoy the Super Bowl football game,
help us to be mindful of those without even a bowl of soup to eat."

Since that day, millions of dollars have been raised for local charities across the country through the Souper Bowl of Caring.  It has become a powerful movement that is transforming Super Bowl weekend into the nation's largest youth-led weekend of giving and serving.

On Sunday, January 27, DeBows will observe the Souper Bowl of Caring event during our Fellowship Time.  We will be accepting food and monetary donations during this time.  Also, a variety of homemade soups will be served.  We have some great cooks in our congregation!  Be part of the movement that shares God's love with those in need.  All donations will directly support the DeBows UMC Food Pantry. Come join us for this special fellowship event and enjoy some
delicious hot soup.  Please use the sign-up sheet outside of Fellowship Hall if you plan to make soup or other food item for this event. You may contact Anita Chichester for more information.  Mark your calendars!  Bring your family, friends and neighbors.
2nd & 4th Monday Each Month
The next Food Pantry distribution is
Monday, January 28
The DeBows Food Pantry will resume its normal distribution schedule on Monday, January 14 at 6:00 PM.  The Food Pantry is open the 2nd & 4th Monday each month from 6:00-8:00pm.  If you would like to volunteer time to support this ministry, please see the sign-up sheet outside of Fellowship Hall.  You may contact Deb Cregle for more information.
