Indivisible SF

Good Morning,

This week your shortlist of actions focuses on ending the shutdown without funding Trump’s wall, opposing William Barr as Attorney General and standing against racism in San Francisco City Hall!

Big update: the Indivisible SF general meetings will now be held twice a month (instead of weekly). Our next meeting will be Sunday, February 3rd.

1. Federal Action: Speak Out--No Border Wall Funding!

The shutdown continues even though the Republicans have the power to end it immediately. It’s important that our MoCs stand firm and demand that the government reopen. No business as usual. No border wall funding.

Senate offices are reporting an uptick in pro-wall calls from constituents. It’s critical that we keep the pressure on both our Senators and House members.

Federal workers are suffering, having already missed one paycheck with no end in sight. Several food banks around the Bay Area have ramped up donations and volunteer hours. SF Supervisor Matt Haney is calling on the Board of Supervisors and the mayor to provide aid to affected workers.

Call to Action: As long as government is shut down, we need to keep calling our members of Congress. Indivisibile National is organizing a National Call-In Day on Wednesday, January 23. Call your Senators and House member to thank them for standing firm on border wall funding and let them know you have their back.

2. Federal Action: NO on William Barr for Attorney General

The Senate is preparing to vote on Trump’s lackey William Barr for the post of Attorney General. Barr has a long record of pushing for unchecked executive powers and wrote an infamous memo arguing against congressional oversight of presidential activities. He also has a proven record of willingness to undermine executive investigations.

Explainer: Barr will likely help Trump interfere in the Mueller investigation and attempt to escape accountability. He will also continue to attack civil rights that Trump and Sessions have already targeted, putting vulnerable communities especially at risk. He’s an unacceptable choice as Attorney General, and senators must oppose him. Indivisible National has drafted a detailed explainer on how William Barr could help undermine the rule of law.

Call to Action:  Call your Senators to make it known that you don’t want Barr as Attorney General. Please thank Senator Harris for her public opposition to both Barr as well as coal industry lobbyist Andrew Wheeler who Trump has nominated for EPA director and insist that Senator Feinstein do the same.

3. Local Action: Call for the Firing of SF City HR Director for Racial Discrimination

We've recently had two city hearings about racial discrimination against Black city workers, with hundreds of Black city workers sharing data and stories. We ask that you follow the lead of the group Wealth and Disparities in the Black Community - Justice 4 Mario Woods, and call for the City HR Director Micki Callahan who has overseen this to be fired.

Call to Action:  Call your SF Supervisor and demand that the City HR Director be fired for systemic racial discrimination against Black city workers.

Raul, a Guatemalan immigrant who has been lived in the US for 29 years, should be reunited with his family to fight his immigration case outside of detention.
Indivisible SF Deep Dive
This weekend, ISF had a fantastic presence both at the Women’s March and at the Martin Luther King Day March. In a divided and turbulent time where we find ourselves face to face with issues of racism and economic injustice, we would like to honor Dr. King’s legacy with the following deep dives.

MLK Day message from Rev. Wm. Barber and the Poor People’s Campaign. When we remember Dr. King's dream of integration and racial reconciliation we also need to remember his caution that: “It’s much easier to integrate a lunch counter than it is to guarantee an annual income and to get rid of poverty for Negroes and all poor people. It’s much easier to integrate a public park than it is to get rid of slums."  The Poor People’s Campaign and Rev. Wm. Barber continue for fight for the dispossessed. Read their message.

Voting Rights in America. Also in remembrance of Martin Luther King Jr., check out our very own member and lifelong civil rights activist Bruce Hartford’s "Voting Rights in America: Two Centuries of Struggle". This pamphlet outlines the history of voting-rights struggles from 1776 to the present, and summarizes the current voting rights issues we are fighting for today. Read it here.

Keep Fighting,

The Indivisible SF Team
