Featured Resource

The featured resource this month is an online Participation Quiz created by Nate Pinsky, a former SFUSD math teacher. You can try out the PQuiz app at pquiz.app, and you can create an account if you want to save and manage multiple participation quizzes. And yes, it's free! You can record strengths and questions by group, and you can also create customizable observation categories. If you have used an older version of Nate's PQuiz, you will see that the new version allows you to make the Participation Quiz full screen and to name your quizzes.

After you try out this new version, feel free to send any ideas for new features or feedback to contact@pquiz.app. A huge thank you to Nate for supporting teachers with this wonderful resource!

Opportunities for Educators and Students

Tensor Women and Mathematics Grants
The Tensor Foundation provides funding to support projects that encourage college and university women and pre-college girls to study and persist in mathematics. The Mathematical Association of America (MAA) encourages secondary mathematics teachers to partner with college or university faculty to submit proposals for projects to the Tensor Women and Mathematics Program.  The website shows examples of possible projects, as well as descriptions of projects that have been funded in the past. Applications will be accepted from college and university mathematics faculty or pre-college mathematics teachers working in conjunction with college and university faculty. The application page includes information about other grants funded by the Tensor Foundation. The deadline for submitting a proposal is February 12, 2019 at 11:59 p.m EST.

MathWorks Math Modeling Challenge
MathWorks Math Modeling (M3) Challenge is a contest for high school juniors and seniors sponsored by the Society for Industrial and Applied Mathematics (SIAM). Through participation, students experience what it’s like to work as a team to tackle a real-world problem under time and resource constraints, akin to those faced by professional mathematicians working in industry. The Challenge awards $100,000 in scholarship prizes ranging from $1000 to $20,000. There are no registration or participation fees. The Challenge takes place from March 1–4, 2019, and the deadline for registering is February 22, 2019. Go to m3challenge.siam.org for more information.

SF Math Teachers Circle
The San Francisco Math Teachers' Circle is a professional community of teachers and mathematicians who love solving fun, challenging math problems. Teachers of any grade level are welcome! Upcoming sessions are on 2/2/19, 3/2/19, and 4/27/19 at the Proof School, 973 Mission Street. Sessions are on Saturdays from 9:30–noon, approximately. Sessions are free, and lunch is provided. Recent Activities

On January 17, CI Cohort 10 came together for the second course follow-up day. This group of elementary, middle school, and high school math teachers thought together about how to help students recognize their brilliance and the brilliance of others by assigning competence. Teachers left with big ideas around how they can plan to assign competence, and how it is their responsibility to shine a light on the strengths that students don't always see in themselves and their classmates... yet!

Thank you for all that you do!
