Law360 reports on an opinion released by U.S. District Judge Kaplan, who presided over the first MBB-FBI trial last October, from late last week in which he criticized the defense team for its focus on the fairness of NCAA rules that keep student-athletes from being paid. Kaplan specifically questioned the strategy of the defense trying to call University of San Francisco sports economics professor Rascher to the stand, which Kaplan says would have just "diverted the jury's attention." More from Kaplan: "The rules — whether wise or fair — simply were contextual facts – part of the milieu in which the fraud allegedly was committed. [...] There would have been a substantial risk that the jury would have concluded that the NCAA rules were unreasonable and that it, therefore, should overlook the payments that defendants facilitated to the families of the student-athletes." The Law360 piece indicates Kaplan's view could impact other defendants who try to use Rascher or other NCAA rules witnesses. Florida State FB's recruiting Twitter account posted an edited graphic of Martin Luther King Jr. doing 'The Chop' on the namesake's holiday. After blow back, the Noles apologized for "missing the mark." More: "In a well-intentioned effort to recognize Martin Luther King Jr. on this special day, a member of our recruiting staff created a graphic using one of Dr. King's quotes - "If I cannot do great things, I can do small things in a great way." The quote resonated with our program's Do Something mantra. However, in our attempt to more closely connect the message to FSU, we foolishly posted a graphic that was not in line with our intent." CBSSports.com's Dodd rolls out a bevy of competitive data from the recently completed FB season, including offenses scoring an average of 29.56 points per game, the third highest mark ever. Passing yards per attempt (7.397) set an all-time record with touchdowns per game, completion percentage & yards per play all in the top three in history. Also, "Not surprisingly, the Big 12 led the country in scoring for the fourth consecutive year (32.3 points per team). The SEC seemed to join the revolution, however, finishing second (32.2). […] Since 2015, the SEC leads all 10 FBS conferences having improved its scoring average 13.2 percent." More. (link)
Latest SBJ: The NCAA & USOC have reached a deal to allow the use of a U.S. Olympic team logo to promote its olympic sports. Key context: "The USOC will offer the rights to any school that has ever had a current student or alumnus make the U.S. Olympic or Paralympic teams — which amounted to 150 schools at the 2016 Rio Games alone." USOC Director of Collegiate Partnerships & former WCC Assoc. Commish for Governance & Institutional Support/SWA Wilhelmi: "There’s obviously a wide range of sponsors and different ways of contributing to the Olympic movement. We ran some numbers, and Division I schools alone spend $5.6 billion on Olympic sports [annually]. When you think about that contribution and how significant it is, we really need to consider them part of who we are." More. (link); College headliner Smith reviews the new arena deal for Texas as Oak View Group's Leiweke calls it "the most unique partnership I’ve ever been a part of." Naming rights for the new venue could go for mid-seven figures annually. More Leiweke: "If you’re going to bet, you bet on a brand like the Longhorns, you bet on people like Chris (Del Conte) and Greg (Fenves), you bet on content, and you look at our track record. I like that combination. We’ll be just fine." (link)
Yale has standardized its Dean's excuse policy for student-athletes. Now, if a student-athlete returns to the New Haven campus from an away contest after midnight, he or she can "obtain a dean’s excuse for in-class obligations taking place that day." Senior Assoc. AD for Student Services Tompkins notes the situation only comes into play on rare occasions. Student Senator Caro: "For instance, if a student came back late from a game, one Dean might give them a Dean’s Excuse for their 9 am class but another might not. This caused a lot of stress for athletes when going on road trips as they never knew what response they would get, making it difficult for them to plan ahead." (link)

Buffalo AD Alnutt, MBB HC Oats & FB boss Leipold discuss how the Bulls have achieved consistent success even with multiple changes in leadership chairs over the last couple of years. Alnutt: "Sustainability is a collaborative effort. It's listening and learning and allowing ideas to be injected that help grow our profile. […] In the short time I've been here, it has been about relationships and building trust." Oats: "Each one of the ADs that have been here are building on each other's success and as coaches, we get to go along for the ride." Leipold: "The potential of this university gave us the room to grow and all of the ADs we've had have given us the latitude within our respective programs to establish the culture and build our foundations the way we wanted to." (link)
Iowa FB HC Ferentz is the longest tenured FBS boss & alongside The Athletic's Dochterman he comments on the state of the game & more. Notably: "This whole thing has grown so much. The resources have grown, the revenues have grown. I’m not being critical of the NCAA, but the NCAA is such a large body of work that it’s hard to understand the issues specific to major college football. It’s hard to change legislation specific to major college football. […] I’ll give basketball credit. They’ve done a better job. I don’t know if they lobby better or what their mechanisms are, but they get change a lot faster. I know they argue as much as we argue when they’re all together. But they’ve been able to be more effective in getting change to materialize NCAA-wise. They’ve kept up with their recruiting patterns. Their rules have kept up better. They’re not perfect, certainly, but they’re better and more pertinent than what we do. We’re so far behind. There were teams last year that didn’t have enough visits to bring kids in June because they used them all the year before. Somehow, some way, we need to be under the NCAA umbrella, but we need a more direct governing body." Lots more. (link)
Looks like Central Connecticut State FB HC Rossomando is leaving New Britain to fill an open staff spot at Rutgers. Rossomando has led the Blue Devils for the past five season, which included its first FCS Playoffs appearance back in 2017. (link)

More on the Softball situation at Oregon comes from The Register-Guard's Meek. Former Ducks & current Texas Softball HC White with an eye-opener, "I was getting frustrated with the whole thing. It just seemed like we were being kept down. I’ve had more conversations with (Texas AD) Chris Del Conte in six months than I have with Rob Mullens in six years." Meek goes on to provide context to how department leadership may have viewed White's job flirtations & a program that "lost something like $1.5M in 2018." Meek: "Oregon didn’t seem inclined to give White another raise unless he won a World Series. And, you know, there might have been some merit to that stance. But the Ducks ended up playing hardball with a guy who throws heat, and what we’re seeing now is the result. […] Even with all they’ve lost, the Ducks still have their fans. I know that because I hear from them all the time. As frustrated as they are with the whole situation, I’m guessing those fans will be back in their seats this season, cheering their team as loudly as ever." (link)
There's been a notable increase in tension between AAC MBB HCs & league referees early in the conference season. The Athletic's Davis with his view, "Look, I understand that coaches like to work the refs, but at a certain point, enough is enough. The sideline behavior of coaches is a significant problem in college basketball, which is why the rules committee has made it a point of emphasis the last few years to encourage the officials to enforce their sportsmanship protocols." Davis also questions AAC Commish Aresco's comments from last week when he said the double ejection of UConn HC Hurley & Tulsa peer Haith could have been handled better. Davis: "So the next time Mike Aresco or any other league commissioner feels the need to send a message, I suggest he direct it at the guys in suits, not stripes. The game will be better off for it." (link)
More on donated rides at Iowa and Iowa State as chauffeur service LimoLink donated $48K worth of rides to various UI sports from August 1, 2016 to July 30, 2018, while Windstar Lines contributed $28K worth of bus services to take ISU coaches, student-athletes and spirit squad members on Tailgate Tours during that time frame. It is unclear which teams benefited from the services. (link)

As usually, Smith's rundown includes a number of examples of well-executed content. Headers: "Chiefs capitalize on anticipation," "Saints serve up different vantage points," "Patriots & Rams serve up design inspiration," & the "NFL gets original with illustrations." (link)
