January Newsletter

See what teens had to say about going on retreat and exploring inner happiness. Spoiler alert: we all had a GREAT time!

Happy January <<First Name *>>

I hope your year is off to a good start and you've had time to reflect and re-set your own inner reserves as well as your outer activities.

This month has gotten off to a great start.

First, I am so happy to share - and thank you again - our end of year fundraising exceeded our goal by . . . 25%! Wow! We are so grateful to everyone. The best news is, it gives us essential resources as we work to make Inner Strength tools available to more teens both in Philadelphia and in sister programs in other states.

I am preparing for the Foundations of Mindfulness Level 1 Teacher Training right now. If you have been interested in learning how to teach mindfulness to teens, I couldn't recommend this program more. We cover a lot of ground and your learning is supported through lecture, discussion sessions, partner-practice, mindfulness practice, readings, and homework. To find out more, please join me on January 29th, on a special online event.

We're hiring! If you, or someone you know, who lives in the Philadelphia region, is interested in helping empower teens. If you have Program Management and Administrative experience and are interested in applying your passion and care to our next growth stage, please send a cover letter and resume to our Associate Director, Charmayne Thompson. Preference will be given to individuals with strong mindfulness and/or education background, as well as individuals with strong technical skills able to work with online project management and other tools.

I always recommend to the school teachers I work with, as well as to our Inner Strength instructors to take some time to contemplate, rejuvenate, and allow yourself to be still and easy. The last 2 weeks I did just that in the beautiful island of Sri Lanka, visiting ancient temples, some relics dating back to 300 BC, seeing elephants, langur monkeys, crocodiles, mongooses, and peacocks in the wild, and enjoying the bathtub warm waves of the Indian Ocean. It was a special trip and I'm grateful to have had the opportunity to take some contemplative time.

Whether you are able to go somewhere new or discover a new restful corner in your neighborhood or even your own house, I encourage you to build that time in and make it an essential aspect of what you do.

Wishing you ease and insight this month,

Amy

Quiet.

It’s a word you don’t often associate with high schools, where hallways and classrooms are usually bustling with the excited conversations of teens.

But Bodine High School in Northern Liberties is quiet. Very quiet. In the foreground is a class of 25 seniors who sit still, focusing on their breath. Eyes closed. Legs uncrossed. Hands resting calmly in their laps.

After a few seconds of stillness, a gentle voice cuts through the silence. The voice belongs to Julie Coopersmith, who is standing in the middle of the classroom in a blue shawl. In her hands, she holds a set of meditation chimes with three bells.

“The beautiful thing about mindfulness is you can’t get it wrong,” she says. . . .
