Happy January, neighbors! It has been a busy month, including being sworn in as the ANC 4B02 Commissioner and joining the Board of the Old Takoma Business Association.

As I kick off my term, please feel free to share this email newsletter with others and encourage them to join the mailing list to learn more about what's going on in the neighborhood, developments at the Advisory Neighborhood Commission, and community events. I am committed to sharing information, and this newsletter will be one of the main ways that I do so.
Neighborhood Updates
*Takoma Aquatic Center Closure: Takoma Aquatic Center (300 Van Buren St, NW) is closed for maintenance Monday, January 14 through Sunday, January 27, 2019. The facility is expected to re-open on Monday, January 28, 2019. Details regarding this and other closures here.

*DC Winter Services: You can stay up to date on closures and city services during snow storms here, and you can join the DC Volunteer Snow Team here.  If you haven't already disposed of your holiday trees and greenery, you can put them where your trash is normally collected until February 2nd, and the city will pick them up for composting. More details here.

*4th / Cedar / Blair Intersection: A representative from the DC Department of Transportation will present at the January 28th ANC 4B meeting regarding the scope and timeline of the intersection improvement project. The latest plans are available here. Community participation to encourage timely action on a long-delayed project would be beneficial. If you have questions but are unable to attend the meeting, please send them to me so that I may share them during the meeting.

*Walter Reed 90-Day Look Ahead: The Parks at Walter Reed issued their 90-Day Look Ahead of On-Site Construction Activities on January 4, 2019. Demolition of Building 2, the former hospital, is set to be completed in February 2019. More here.

*Resources for Furloughed Workers: Community members have been and are stepping up to assist furloughed federal workers. The Shepherd Park Citizens Association and Shepherd Park Christian Church are offering a FREE-tique of non-food items on Saturday, January 26th and Sunday, January 27th. More here. DC is offering free lunch to kids 18 and under from 12-1 pm at Emery Rec Center (5701 Georgia Ave, NW) during the shutdown. No application or ID is required. TPSS Co-op is offering a $300 line of shopping credit to any members impacted by the shutdown. The City Paper is maintaining a list of resources here. Stay tuned for additional resources.
ANC 4B January Meeting
*Regular Meeting: January 28, 7 pm, 4th District Police Station
*Next Planning Meeting: February 12, 6:30 pm, 4th District Police Station
The Commission will hold its regular monthly meeting on Monday, January 28th at 7 pm at the 4th District Police Station (6001 Georgia Ave, NW). The draft agenda includes the following:
  • Election of Officers, appointment of representative to the Walter Reed Community Advisory Committee, and appointment of representative to the Walter Reed Foreign Mission Committee.
  • Presentation from Ward 4 Councilmember Brandon Todd, including an opportunity to ask questions regarding ANC 4C's decision to send two letters to DC government agencies requesting an investigation into emails sent by the Councilmember. More here.
  • Presentation by DDOT regarding plans and timing for intersection improvement project at 4th / Cedar / Blair.
  • Consent Calendar: 240 Quackenbos St, NW - special exception to allow for an expanded child development home with 20 children and 5 staff; 5901 Blair Rd, NE - public space occupancy permit application for curb cut; 8th & Underwood Streets, NW - BZA variance for residential backyard deck.
  • Letters of Inquiry to the City of Takoma Park and MPD regarding an incident involving a Takoma Park Police dog attacking a 4B resident.
  • 7126 Chestnut St, NW - two-story rear addition in Historic District.
  • 500 Dahlia St, NW - rooftop solar panels in Historic District.
  • 7331 Georgia Ave, NW - BZA exception for penthouse.
  • 6239 Georgia Ave, NW - BZA exception for Dominoes relocation.
  • 5642-5650 3rd St, NE - rezoning of vacant property.
  • VIP Room - zoning modification.

What's happening in local government?
Check out these DC Council legislative and other updates.
  • The DC Council overrode Mayor Muriel Bowser's veto of the Fare Evasion Decriminalization Act, which replaces the possibility of jail time with a $50 fine. More here.
  • Campaign finance legislation moved forward as Mayor Bowser chose not to sign the bill (a measure short of a veto). More here.
  • Mayor Bowser announced expanded investment in naloxone kits to address opioid crisis. More here.
  • At-Large Councilmember Anita Bonds proposed legislation to protect federal workers and contractors from eviction and foreclosure. More here.
  • Ward 6 Councilmember Charles Allen introduced legislation to increase accountability and transparency of at-risk funding for schools, and Ward 4 Councilmember Brandon Todd introduced legislation to expand DC's dual language schools. More here.
  • 26 ANC Commissioners, including me, joined forces to reject their parking passes to encourage government investment in public transit and infrastructure, as well as ethical use of government resources. More here and here.
  • The State Board of Education issued recommendations on teacher and principal retention, including ensuring the District is collecting full data on teachers, principals, and school leaders; establishing non-salary-based incentives for teachers to stay; building models that empower teachers and provide for distributed leadership; and reducing the emphasis on high-stakes testing.
  • The proposed 2019-2020 DC Public Schools calendars are available for viewing and public comment here.
  • WMATA is seeking feedback on their proposed FY2020 budget, including expanded weekday rush hours, extending all Red Line trains to Glenmont during weekday rush hours, and implementing a $2 weekend flat fare. Their online feedback survey is available here.
  • The Department of Energy & Environment is now offering a residential relief program for the Clean Rivers Impervious Area Charge on water bills. Details here.
