Margot Shorey is an alumna from The Fletcher School of Law and Diplomacy at Tufts University. Before Fletcher, she worked for an NGO implementing USAID-funded programs, coupled with some medium-term stints in Africa. While at Fletcher, she focused on her interests in African security and U.S. foreign policy in Africa, completing her Master of Arts in Law and Diplomacy in 2013. After graduation, Margot worked for the African Center of Strategic Studies, as well as the Department of Defense.

When looking to transition to the State Department, Margot used her expertise of Boko Haram to become the Counter Boko Haram Policy Analyst, serving under the Africa Bureau’s Senior Coordinator. In this role she served as one of the lead writers of the U.S. Strategy to Counter Boko Haram, and provided input to senior policy makers. She has recently accepted a contractor position in the Africa Bureau at the State Department, coordinating Countering Violent Extremism programs in East and West Africa. She manages grants that build resilience among communities, promote messages of peace and tolerance, encourage defections, and support the deradicalization of former fighters.
