The Working Group is charged with reviewing the creation and use of READ plans under the READ Act and will make recommendations in 2020 to the State Board of Education and the House and Senate education committees.

The survey will close Friday, Feb. 8. Participate via Survey Monkey.

Ensure all Colorado children have summer meals

The Summer Food Service Program (SFSP), administered by the CDE School Nutrition Unit, ensures that children have access to healthy meals during the summer, which is critical for their health and well-being. The SFSP provides free meals and snacks to youth 18 years and younger when school is not in session.

School Food Authorities already participating in the National School Lunch Program can use the federal reimbursement funding from any other child nutrition program to support their operation of summer meals and vice versa.

Please work with your food service director to help support or start a summer meals program.

For more information and resources, visit the program webpage.

Computer science professional development opportunities are now available for elementary teachers

CDE has approximately $500,000 available for computer science professional development for elementary teachers this spring.

Districts must apply by Thursday, Feb. 28, for one of two training opportunities:

  1. Training through a partnership with the Colorado School of Mines
Applications from districts must include the number of teachers who will attend the training. All regions across the state will have at least one training in their area. Participating teachers will qualify for up to a $250 stipend.

  2. District-determined professional development
BootUp and mindSpark Learning are professional development providers that have already met qualifications for the Colorado Computer Science Education Grant. Districts may choose to engage with these organizations directly or choose other providers better suited for their district needs. Districts may request teacher stipends or substitute pay in their application.

For details, resources and the application, visit the Computer Science Grants for Teachers Program webpage.

Support & Intervention

School Attendance Task Force recommendation released

School attendance rates have steadily declined since 2013-14 and the number of habitual truants is on the rise in Colorado, which signaled the need for closer look at factors influencing attendance in Colorado. In December 2017, the School Attendance Task Force (SATF) was formed to address chronic absenteeism and truancy. The SATF included a cross-sector team of 50 leaders, representing more than 26 schools, districts, organizations, judicial districts and state agencies.

Collectively, SAFT teams conducted a statewide scan of intervention strategies and identified common themes, which led to the production of six recommendations:

  1. Create a multi-step process before a truancy court referral
  2. Leverage funding from multiple sources
  3. Focus attention on awareness of importance of attendance, truancy, and prevention and intervention supports that are available
  4. Build collaborative communities to help families navigate and more quickly access resources in the community
  5. Improve school climate
  6. Increase the value of education

The SATF completed its work in December 2018. The task force's recommendations and attendance resource materials are available to assist school districts and can be found on the Dropout Prevention and Student Re-Engagement homepage.
