This monthly newsletter shares the latest news and updates from the UNSW Medicine Neuroscience, Mental Health and Addiction Theme and SPHERE Clinical Academic Group (CAG).
Together, the Theme and CAG support the development of collaborative groups that bring together research, education and clinical partners to address the burdens imposed by neurological, mental health, and drug and alcohol disorders.

Professor Anthony Shakeshaft shares his hopes for Indigenous health research
Professor Anthony Shakeshaft is Deputy Director of the National Drug and Alcohol Research Centre (NDARC) at UNSW Sydney and leads the Aboriginal Health and Wellbeing priority area of the Theme and CAG.
“Clinical practice should be evidence-based but services need to be provided in a way that makes them most accessible and meaningful to Aboriginal patients and, therefore, most effective.”

New study to evaluate outcomes, processes and costs of depot buprenorphine
The CoLAB project will evaluate patient outcomes following the implementation of monthly injections of depot buprenorphine for the treatment of opioid dependence.
Experiences gained through the trial will inform models of care and the incorporation of depot buprenorphine into national clinical guidelines and training programs for health providers.

Global collaboration drives new test to predict genetic Alzheimer’s disease
Neuroscience Research Australia (NeuRA) has collaborated on a publication in Nature Medicine that details evidence for a blood test that can predict familial Alzheimer disease 16 years before clinical symptoms appear. Read more. |

Use of multiple markers recommended to better estimate CVD burden
A systematic review by researchers from the Centre for Healthy Brain Ageing (CHeBA) found that only a small range of markers are used to identify cerebrovascular disease (CVD) burden. Read more.
