Journey of the Universe newsletter: January 2019
Hello from 2019!  We're excited to connect with you in this new year.  The beginning of a fresh year is a fitting time to reflect on the expansive and grounded story of evolution.  And there's no better place to start than with the Beginning of the Universe.

How did this all begin? 

What aspects of our own existence were actually present at the beginning of the universe?

What does this imply about who we are and our relation to the cosmos?

While these questions might feel too big, distant, or abstract to answer, we don't raise them for the sake of finding absolute answers. 

We ask you to wonder with us. 

The creators of the Journey project imagine that by knowing more about the universe and Earth, we will also know more about ourselves. 

We believe that the powerful connection between the cosmos and our sense of self may give us grounds for navigating our own journey in challenging times. 

When we enter into the story of the universe, it can give us space to think and slow down.  It can give us energy for creative generation and innovation.  It can give us resiliency and hope that we can dig into and with which we can move forward.   

We offer varied perspectives of the story of the universe so that you have a series of different but related gateways into the epic story of our cosmos and Earth. 

Throughout this year, we'll explore the discoveries and passions of scientists and historians, environmentalists and teachers, gardeners and urban planners.  All of them are reflecting on how we can be more fully alive in the context of participating in a universe story. 

To begin the year and rekindle your own reflections, we offer you the story of the Beginning of the Universe.  To go back to the earliest moments of our universe, you can: 
 
We're excited to announce that the first episode of the Journey of the Universe Conversation Series is now available in podcast format!   You can now listen to the story of the cosmos in your headphones or car stereo as you travel throughout your day.

The Journey of the Universe Conversation Series is a twenty-part series featuring scientists, environmentalists, and educators in conversation with Mary Evelyn Tucker of Yale University.  Throughout this expansive series of conversations, you will learn about a multidisciplinary perspective of the cosmos that re-imagines the universe story and the human role in the flourishing of the Earth community. The series invites viewers to become fellow travelers on an immense journey — from the beginnings of the universe, to the origins of life, to our current emergence as a planetary presence.  

Together, we explore this immense journey as we continue to release new episodes of the Journey of the Universe Conversation Series in podcast form.
 

Discover or remember the universe you find yourself in with The Known Universe video from the American Museum of Natural History. 

The Known Universe takes viewers from the Himalayas through our atmosphere and the inky black of space to the afterglow of the Big Bang. Every star, planet, and quasar seen in the film is possible because of the world's most complete four-dimensional map of the universe, the Digital Universe Atlas that is maintained and updated by astrophysicists at the American Museum of Natural History.

ONLINE CLASSES
High school student Emily Cho recently shared some warm words with us from her home in Illinois.  We are delighted to read how and where the Journey of the Universe materials impact individuals and communities across the globe.
