January Newsletter
W 42 Street Magazine

W 42 St magazine is a local Hell's Kitchen publication distributed in New York City. The initial issue of 2019 featured St. Luke's Lutheran Church (Times Square) and two of its members who work to provide educational scholarships for students in East Africa.

The article was published in January just as we received a guest from Uganda who is important to both groups.  Friar Godwin Ogam, the Provincial Superior of Uganda for the Capuchin Franciscan brothers, was a poor student when he met Gayle at language school in Tanzania over a dozen years ago.  A few years ago, she connected him to Richard Nesbit who assists Ugandan and refugee students in Uganda.

A wonderful time together was experienced, friendships were renewed, and an informative presentation was held at coffee hour at St. Luke's Lutheran Church on January 13th.

Take a look at the article here.
A wise word from a GLK friend.
Graduate Gaspary
Gaspary came to us in 2015, the year robbers attacked his family home and killed his father.  With the family in grief and disarray, Gaspary’s continued education, following his secondary school graduation, was in jeopardy.

GLK was happy to help support Gaspary during his studies at the local college of environmental health sciences in Kagemu, Bukoba. We are glad to report his graduation at the end of 2018.

Gaspary passed all sections with excellent marks. An example of his subjects during the final year were:
  • Prevention of International Diseases and Emergences at Port of Entry
  • Information Communication and Technology
  • Assessment of Occupational Hazard
  • Environmental Pollution Control
Teacher Gayle and Linda Voss were able to meet with Gaspary in 2016, and were impressed with his maturity and sweet demeanor.  We all look forward to hearing more about his future in the coming year.

If you are in the market for a new laptop, and your old laptop still has life in it, consider donating it to the GLK Student Fund.  Brand is not important, but it should be in good shape.  We have a list of students and volunteers who could utilize a gently used laptop.  Contact us at glkstudentfund@gmail.com.
Thank You!
