President's Column

We had our first board meeting of the year on January 23rd. We focused on clarifying a couple of things.

Late riders: There was a question about what should the ride starter do if a rider shows up at wheels-down time. We believe that the ride starter should be considerate to the cyclists who are ready to go at wheels-down time. The ride starter is not going to hold up the entire group as he or she waits for the late cyclists to get ready to leave.

When there is a stay-together route, the group doing that route often leads shortly after wheels-down time. This delay might give the late rider time to complete his or her bike preparations and to sign our liability release waiver.

The bottom line is to make it to the ride start location in time to be ready to ride at wheels-down time.

Riders who don't sign our liability release waiver: If a rider doesn't sign in, then the rider isn't legally part of the Wheelmen ride.

Canceled ride notifications:  Our goal is to reduce the likelihood that you will show up at a SAW ride after a cancellation. The plan is to announce the cancellation at least 1 hour before the wheels-down time. The ride starter determines whether the official SAW ride will happen. If the decision is made to cancel it, the ride starter will then contact our Ride Chair, Bob Waldo, or me. One of us will post the announcement to our social media accounts (Facebook, Instagram, & Twitter) and our website. The cancellation will appear on our website's home page via Twitter.  Our home page will show our most recent twitter posts right below the list of the three upcoming rides. Be sure to check social media or our website before departing.

We look forward to great riding this year!

2019 Wheelmen 100

This year's Wheelmen 100 is scheduled for Saturday, September 21st. It will be the fourth iteration of our annual ride. Again, this year the ride will be benefiting Earn A Bike. Each year the ride has gotten bigger and better! Last year we had over 200 riders and raised $5,000.00 for Earn A Bike. This year, our goals are even bigger, but we can’t do it without your help. We need:

  • Five people committed to finding sponsors to contribute to Earn A Bike. One of our founding sponsors has agreed to match sponsorship contributions up to $5,000.00.
  • Three volunteers to work as a team in publicizing the ride, reaching out to bike shops, other charity rides, community leaders, and creating content for social media advertising.
  • Six leaders to help make the ride successful by leading a team of volunteers prior to and on race day. We need a leader for each of the following teams:
    • On-site Registration & Ride Services
    • SAG
    • Rest Stop
    • Parking
    • Route Marking
    • Security

If you are like me, cycling is a passion. There is nothing better than popping on a bike and knocking out a ride. This ride is a chance for all of us to share our passion by supporting the next generation of riders! Please join me and the SAW leadership team by supporting our annual ride.

For a full list of roles that need to be filled, please review our volunteers' page. If you're ready to volunteer, you can submit your information or contact me.

We want your cycling photos!

We’d love for you to share some of the photos that you take before, during, and after our rides! If you have a photo that you’d like to share, please send it to photos@sawheelmen.com.

Saturdays are Jersey Rides

We encourage all members to wear their club jerseys on all Saturday club rides. They look great and it’s an awesome sight when a large group goes out in our colors. Being a Wheelmen is something to be proud of so show your spirit.

Need a jersey?

Contact Jerry Hyndman and he’ll get you fixed up.

Bicycle Education

Our next class, Introduction to Road Riding 101, will begin February 23, 2019. Please email info@sawheelmen.com for questions or to sign up.
