KEIKI WHALEWATCH: MOLOKAI
Just 2 months ago, we celebrated our "Welcome Home the Whales" and launched our annual Online Auction as a fundraiser to engage schoolchildren in our award-winning Keiki Whalewatch program (WATCH video). We are proud to announce that we have already served 1,000+ participants since that time and just reached our goal of continuing the program on the island of Molokai. Mahalo nui to our Online Auction donors and our Members for making this dream come true for these deserving keiki. Interested in sponsoring a keiki program? Contact us. The official festival kickoff, as well as one of Maui’s largest and most scenic run and walk events. A variety of courses encourage all abilities, with 800+ participants annually and growing. The Run & Walk is followed by a courtyard celebration featuring Hawaii’s reggae ambassador, Marty Dread with breakfast, community sponsors, the Wild & Wonderful Whale Regatta and prizing.

Online registration will close at 11:59 pm (Hawaiian-Aleutian time) on Wednesday, January 30, 2019 . If you have questions, email our race director at run@pacificwhale.org
“This is an event I look forward to each year,” Jim Lynch, Co-Race Director of the Maui Marathon and VP of Valley Isle Road Runners said. “To support a great non-profit such as Pacific Whale Foundation is vital. The Run and Walk for Whales has been a consistent run for years and well participated by locals and visitors. It is a good addition to your vacation if you are a visitor and a good morning of fun. And of course, go on one of the PWF cruises. Worth every penny. The crew is friendly and amazing. And this time of the year, you WILL see whales!”

WORLD WHALE FILM FESTIVAL | FEB 8
FRIDAY, FEB 8 | 5pm
Historic Iao Theater, Wailuku
The annual World Whale Film Festival promotes international storytellers who are passionate about our oceans. Growing in popularity each year, this 3rd annual event will engage guests with short films and a filmmaker panel discussion that focuses on solutions regarding marine debris and other issues effecting ocean health. The official theme of World Whale Film Festival 2019 is ‘inspiring ocean health through waves of change’.
“It’s a great honor to return to my home island of Maui to be able to help host this event,” says event emcee Kimi Werner, “What drives me to it the most is that it’s not a film festival based purely on ocean conservation and some of the issues that the oceans are facing; the goal is not just to point out the problems, but to lead people with a positive message of hope and a call to action for how we can help our seas.”

Why do whales sing?
Groans and grunts, whistles and woops—these are some of the many sounds you can hear when listening to humpback whales singing. Although humpback whale song is one of the most widely recognized animal sounds, surprisingly little is known about its purpose. READ MORE

GREAT WHALE COUNT: JAN - FEB - MAR!
On Saturday, January 26, Pacific Whale Foundation will host one of three “Great Whale Count” research events (Jan 26, Feb 23, Mar 30 from 8 am - 12 pm), which are free and open to the public. The annual Great Whale Count brings volunteers together to count whales from shore as part of a long-term survey of humpback whales in Hawaii. This 3-part event provides a snapshot of trends in relative abundance of whales and is one of the world’s longest-running citizen scientist projects.
“There is scientific evidence that the peak of whale season is shifting earlier, towards January,” continues Stack, “and we wanted to capture that information in our data set. We also wanted to better align our event with the Sanctuary Ocean Count, as we use very similar methodologies so our data can be compared, and their counts take place on Oahu, Kauai, and the Big Island so we have a comprehensive snapshot of the trends across the Main Hawaiian Islands.”
