FA Cup: Newcastle leave it to extra time, Shrewsbury huge comeback

Blackburn Rovers 2-4 Newcastle
Newcastle scored two goals in extra time to defeat Blackburn in their FA Cup third-round replay at Ewood Park. Sean Longstaff scored after a minute for the visitors with a deflected 25-yard shot, before Callum Roberts added the second with a fine volley. But Adam Armstrong pulled one back from Danny Graham's pass and Darragh Lenihan's powerful header made it 2-2. In extra time, Joselu scored from a rebound and Ayoze Perez's powerful strike sealed the win for the visitors. Spanish striker Joselu appeared to be slightly offside for the goal that made it 3-2, as he reacted quickest after Blackburn keeper David Raya had spilled Fabian Schar's long-range shot. Newcastle's win was their first in seven games in all competitions, since a 1-0 Premier League victory at Huddersfield on 15 December, and they will play Watford at home in the fourth round on 26 January.

Luton Town 0-1 Sheffield Wednesday
Atdhe Nuhiu scored Sheffield Wednesday's first goal in their last four FA Cup games to beat Luton Town and book a place in the fourth round. The forward beat James Shea from 10 yards a minute after the interval, after strike partner Steven Fletcher brought the ball down inside the box. Luton had their chances to draw level but Cameron Dawson produced two saves to deny Luke Berry and Dan Potts. Wednesday will face holders Chelsea at Stamford Bridge in the next round.

Stoke City 2-3 Shrewsbury Town
League One Shrewsbury came from two goals down to beat Championship Stoke and reach the FA Cup fourth round. Tyrese Campbell's double put Stoke in command but Sam Ricketts' side scored three times in 10 second-half minutes at the Bet365 Stadium. James Bolton's 20-yard effort, Fejiri Okenabirhie's penalty and Josh Laurent's 81st-minute strike completed the turnaround. Shrewsbury host Wolves in the fourth round on 26 January. (BBC)

CONCACAF: Player of the year awards

Mexico and the United States split the CONCACAF awards for best player of 2018, with El Tri winger Hirving Lozano named male player of the year and the U.S. striker Alex Morgan taking the female prize. Lozano, at 23, becomes the youngest ever winner of the award on the men's side after consistent form for Dutch side PSV Eindhoven and a famous goal to help Mexico to a 1-0 win over Germany at the World Cup. It's the third consecutive occasion Morgan has won the women's prize and her fourth CONCACAF player of the year award since they began in 2013. The 29-year-old Orlando Pride player scored 18 goals in 19 appearances for the U.S. national team in 2018. (ESPNFC)

MLS: Austin FC joins as newest team in the MLS

Expansion in Major League Soccer has continued to be expressed around North America with several areas already being granted teams for the near future. Austin FC became the latest team announced, being named the league’s 27th club on Tuesday who will begin MLS play in 2021. The announcement came at Rustic Tap in Austin with MLS commissioner Don Garber alongside Austin FC chairman/CEO Anthony Precourt and Austin mayor Steve Adler. Austin will become the city’s first team in a major professional sports league and will soon build a privately funded soccer stadium at McKalla Place. “Austin is a thriving metropolitan city – the personification of what we mean when we say MLS is a ‘League for a new America,’” Garber said in a league release. “We are extremely proud to be the first major professional sports league to become part of the culture of this historic American city." Wednesday morning transfer talk

Source: ESPNFC
  • Arsenal are willing to pay some of Mesut Ozil's wages after he leaves the Emirates if that would make a potential move more likely. There has been interest from China and loan interest from Inter Milan, but with Unai Emery seemingly not a fan and the wages proving burdensome, Arsenal look like they're getting desperate.
  • Christian Eriksen is unlikely to sign a new contract with Tottenham. Instead, the Denmark international is likely to join Real Madrid, with the £100 million mark being discussed by the two clubs.
  • Chelsea could offer Petr Cech a new (but at the same time old) home after his announcement that he is to retire at the end of the season.
  • Alvaro Morata's desire to leave Chelsea could have hit a snag. Atletico Madrid don't want to buy him outright. Atletico, the club where Morata started his youth career, had been linked with a move for the 26-year-old but are interested in bringing the striker in on only a short-term loan.
