POLITICS: Yesterday, William Barr - Trump’s nominee for attorney general - testified before the Senate. You heard Barr announce that he doesn’t believe special counsel Robert Mueller’s investigation is a “witch hunt” - the exact opposite of what Prez Trump keeps saying. Plus that he’d resign if Trump asked him to fire Mueller without good cause. Barr also nodded his head to former attorney general Jeff Sessions’ decision to recuse himself from the Russia investigation - but said he wouldn’t recuse himself. Now, all eyes are on Capitol Hill today as Barr’s hearing continues. Speaking of which, a judge just shot down the Trump team’s 2020 census question about citizenship. Makes cens(us).
WORLD: Recently, at least 14 people were killed after a group of armed men opened fire on a hotel complex in Nairobi and set off explosions. Hundreds of people were held under siege. After hours of gunfire, authorities were able to safely evacuate 700 people and eliminate the armed men. A terrorism group called al-Shabaab is claiming responsibility. Meanwhile, everyone is talking about El Chapo. You know El Chapo for being on trial in New York for things like drugs, murder, money laundering, and guns. Then, yesterday, one of his former aides alleged that El Chapo handed over $100 million to ex-Mexican Prez Enrique Peña Nieto in exchange for calling off a manhunt. Not a typo. Peña Nieto is denying everything. Stay tuned.
USA: The gov shutdown is entering its 26th day. And there’s still no end in sight. Now, some are saying the economy could start to be seriously affected if the shutdown continues much longer. In other news, yesterday, Sen Kirsten Gillibrand (D-NY) said ‘since you’re short on candidates, thought I’d throw my name in the mix’ and announced that she’d be running for prez. She’s joining around six others who’ve already declared their 2020 bid. Competition, steep. Speaking of which, the entire House of Reps - including Rep Steve King (R-IA) - voted to condemn King’s racist statements. This comes after King came under fire for publicly questioning why white supremacy is bad.
