Directors Message

On January 8, CCI hosted and honored the work of Boise’s Drug Free Idaho (DFI) Coalition and their compelling work behind the Colorado Documentary “Chronic State.”

Hosted at the Lincoln Center in Idaho’s Capitol Building along with members of the Idaho Office of Drug Policy, more than 100 legislators, coalition leaders and supporters attended two showings of Chronic State.

Colorado residents and prominent speakers in the documentary, Dr. Brad Roberts and Lynn Reimer, were two of the four speakers on the expert panel following the documentary, lending their expertise and credibility to the overall event.

The event hosted several representatives from coalitions across the state who held conversations and shared their thoughts on Idaho marijuana legalization.

In the question and answer sessions that followed each viewing, legislators make it clear that they want to hear from their constituents.  With so much pro-pot information flowing into Idaho, they encouraged the coalitions to continue to provide information and education so that decisions can be made based on facts and data as we work together to keep our communities drug-free.

Thank you to all who made phone calls, sent emails and attended and supported this event. This is when coalitions are at their best, creating these connections. Please continue to reach out to your area representatives.

Board Spotlight
Penny
Jones

Region 3 Rep.
Where are you from?
I was born in San Diego, California.

How long have you lived in Idaho?
I have lived in Bruneau, Idaho for 38 years.

What brought you to the area?
We lived in Prospect, Oregon and the spotted owl controversy caused my husband's teaching job to be cut. He interviewed for a position at Rimrock Jr. Sr. High School where he accepted a new teaching position. We have lived in Bruneau since 1980.

Family:
When we moved to Idaho I had an addiction to alcohol and prescription drugs due to self-medicating for depression. I hit bottom and went through treatment 38 years ago and have been sober ever since. I consider that my greatest accomplishment due to the fact that I may not be alive or have a family if I hadn't realized how addiction was controlling my life! I have a wonderful husband, three beautiful adult children and four beautiful grandchildren.

Education:
Graduated from Prospect High School in Oregon in 1970
Attended Dental assistant school in Medford, Oregon
I have gone through several required classes to become a Prevention Provider as well as attended CCI, BHB and ICADD trainings for 10 years.

What do you do for work in addition to your CCI volunteer board position?
I serve as Region 3 Representative for CCI and during my time serving I have seen so much good come out of this organization. The main thing I bring to the table is the prevention component. I believe I have a lot to offer CCI on prevention programs that I have implemented in our school. I believe its never to early to start.

Tell us more about your occupation, how you trained for it, etc.?
I am also a board member on the Behavioral Health Board for Region 3 and was recently appointed to the State Behavioral Health Planning Council. I believe behavioral health and drug and alcohol addiction go hand in hand. If we can heal one it will be the start to heal the other. I have spent the last 13 years teaching prevention programs in our school district. I have been to several trainings hosted by and learned so much as well as networking with others to make CCI everything it can possibly be.

How did you become a board member of CCI?
I have been attending CCI meetings since 2002 and it gave me such a passion to help keep this organization strong. If I could help in any way I would, so I asked to be on the board and was elected.

What are your personal goals serving on the board?
To help with legislation, prevention and recovery.

What do you hope to accomplish during your time on the board?
I hope to connect the Behavioral Health Board prevention funding opportunity with CCI to make sure our State is stronger in prevention programs, recovery programs and treatment programs. I believe we are stronger together.

What do you do for fun?
I love to travel but also love to spend time with my family and young people.

What do you do when you're not at work?
I volunteer in the ER at our local hospital as well as teach CCD for the Catholic Church. I love to watch my grandchildren play sports and my daughter compete in USTRC Ropings.

What are some hobbies or activities you enjoy?
Walking, praying and family!
