The Beat
For writers who mean business

Of Icebergs And Dignity

Find A Way Media, which publishes The Beat, gets a lot of applications from writers. Like, a lot.

This is not to brag. A better entrepreneur than myself would certainly have thought up something to do with them all, and to help everybody find work. But in January alone we received 43.

And, sorry to say, exceedingly few applicants are a good fit. Most make an error so common that this week, I wrote about the only way I know to correct it.

It isn't easy.

Grammar Tip

When do I spell numbers out?

Spell out one through nine, use numerals for 10 and up.

Exceptions: If it's the beginning of a sentence, spell it out (Eleven thousand marketers ... ) or if it's a non-whole number, use numerals (1/35th, 3.14).
