Welcome Message

With the 2019 season of 4-H beginning in Chatham-Kent, the Board of Directors would like to introduce you to the new directors this year.  We would like to welcome Chris White, Lori Ball and Theresa Buis to the board and look forward to working with you!
Chris White

I am 41 years old and married with 3 kids. I have worked in agriculture for the last 18 years. We live on the family farm I grew up on just outside of McKay’s Corners. All 3 of our kids have been involved in many 4-H clubs. I have been a leader of the Sheep Club for 4 years and I am leading the Maple Syrup Club for the first time this year. I think 4-H is an organization that teaches kids many great life skills and I am proud to be able to help the organization.
Lori Ball

My name is Lori Ball, I live on a farm in the old Chatham township with my husband Jason and our two children, Rebekah age 13 and Wyatt age 11. I grew up on a farm in Tilbury.

Both of my children are 4-H club members and are in a variety of clubs. They enjoy each and every club that they have joined.  I'm excited to be involved on the 4-H board of directors.

Theresa Buis
Hello! My name is Theresa Buis and I am very excited to have recently joined the Chatham-Kent 4-H board of directors. Growing up on a farm in North Raleigh Township, and being involved in various 4-H clubs I had lots of opportunity to enjoy learning about what it means to be a part of agriculture in our community. My entire life I have worked with crops and animals including farming with my family, and running my own equine business on my own farm. In my free time I love riding my horse, especially taking him to team penning events in the area. I love being in the outdoors and enjoying what nature has to offer. I’m excited and thankful for the opportunity to use my education and experience in agriculture in a new way, and help shape this amazing organization.

My Provincial 4-H Leadership Camp Experience
By: Nicole Litwin

Choosing to attend PLC 2019 was the best decision I could have made. I admit, it was unnerving to travel hours away from home to an isolated camp up north for 6 days with 71 people, most who I’d never met before, but taking that risk was beyond worth it. From the moment I stepped off the bus to the moment I was packing to head back home, I was having the time of my life, full of nonstop laughs, energizing activities, relationship building, and personal growth. In one week, I made more friends from all across Ontario than I thought was possible, and throughout the week those friendships became stronger and stronger.

While at PLC, there were many opportunities that allowed me to meet and bond with others. Primarily, we were each put on a ‘starship’ for the week. The people on this team became family very fast; I was on the ‘Columbia’ ship. Within my ship, we all joined committees that gave us chances to lead events for the whole camp. We all continuously challenged each other, competed together, grew together, and participated in fun activities such as snowshoeing, axe throwing, and square dancing.

There are honestly no words that truly describe how life-changing PLC was for me. Anyone who has the opportunity to attend should definitely jump at the chance! The experience changes you and provides you with great leadership skills and self-confidence that you’re then able to bring home and use in your everyday life. While at PLC, I broke out of my shell. The supportive and energetic environment that the facilitators created allowed me to embrace both my leadership qualities and my ability to let loose and be goofy. Nothing feels better than being enthusiastic and cheering at the top of your lungs with your team. I’ve learned to never turn down an opportunity; you never know what experience you might miss.

Mental Health First Aid Clinic
On February 16 & 23, ten of us were able to attend a Mental Health First Aid Clinic put on by Insight Advantage. This clinic was made possible by the generous grant from Dowler-Karn. The clinic was very helpful in educating us on how to look for signs/symptoms for those with Mental Health issues. Being aware of change in behaviour or routine in family, friends, co-workers and our 4-H community is key in the process of helping someone who might be struggling. This was an excellent clinic and all who attended were thankful for the opportunity! Thank you Dowler-Karn and Chatham Kent 4-H!

Mental Health First Aid Training Update
Ten Chatham-Kent leaders recently completed their Mental Health First Aid training in Chatham thanks to the generous support of Dowler-Karn and Pioneer.

We would like to continue the trend of having Chatham-Kent 4-H leaders trained in Mental Health First Aid (MHFA), and to do this the Chatham-Kent board has set aside funds to subsidize the training of five more leaders.  If there is a MHFA training that you would like to take, register and complete the course.  Once you have completed the course send the board a copy of your receipt and your MHFA certificate and the board will reimburse you up to $120 for the cost of the training.  The money will be given to leaders on a first come basis.

To find trainings the easiest place to go is the Mental Health First Aid Canada webpage and search for a course.  That being said there are some local upcoming classes, if they fit into your schedule, listed below. Thank you to all leaders who have taken the training!

Upcoming Classes - click on the date for more info:

Windsor (March 27-28th): basic MHFA
Chatham (April 10-11th): specifically adults who deal with youth
Chatham (April 25-26th): basic MHFA

Chatham (May 1-2nd): basic MHFA
