YAX is growing! In addition to our new youth art space [x]space at Mission and Geneva, we’ve hired two new staff and a new Architecture faculty artist. Welcome Jorge Courtade, Chantelle Schultz, Adan Romo, and Logan Kelley!

Logan and Adan will be teaching architecture classes at John O'Connell High School and you can find Jorge and Chantelle at the office at 29 Howth or at [x]space at 5137 Geneva – come say hi! We are so excited to be expanding as an organization so we can offer more program support for our youth.

Logan Kelley is a young licensed architect and an Associate at Mithun here in San Francisco. He has a deep interest in teaching that has spanned his career since early in college and has taught students ranging in age from kindergarten to high school to college. He has an MArch from California College of the Arts (CCA) and a BA in Physics from Pitzer College, Claremont Colleges. Logan vows to always be looking to new fields for inspiration, knowledge, and routes to problem solving. He values a warm and comfortable work environment where ideas can be communicated easily and with smiles. Logan will be teaching the Advanced Architecture Firm class at YAX this Spring.

Adan Romo is a designer, maker, and artist with an individualized major connecting Industrial Design, Furniture, and Jewelry. Ever inspired by how things could be improved, and a background that is rooted in design + fine craft, he has a strong and valuable set of skills, that can be applied in a variety of areas. He’ll be working closely with Logan and Chris Wood from John O’Connell High School to to teach the Industrial and Product Design class at YAX this Spring.

Chantelle Schultz grew up in San Francisco and received her B.A. in East Asian Studies and World Islamic & Middle East Studies from McGill University in Montreal. She served as Copy Editor and then Multimedia Editor at The McGill Daily, and as a managing editor at re:asian magazine. She also sat on the 2017-18 Board of Directors of the Quebec Public Interest Research Group (QPIRG) at McGill. After moving back to San Francisco, she worked as a researcher and editor at the Arab and Muslim Ethnicities and Diasporas (AMED) Institute at San Francisco State University, and as a Youth Drawing and Painting Instructor for AYPAL – Building API Community Power in Oakland. Chantelle is inspired by youth and community art and political organizing, and enjoys filmmaking, painting, and singing. She is also an alumna of Lick-Wilmerding High School. Jorge Courtade is a DJ, writer and graphic designer with Bay Area roots who lives in San Francisco’s Excelsior District. He earned a B.A. in Communication Studies from the University of San Francisco. His work in music and event production centers Central American identity, community outreach and emerging sounds of the Latinx diaspora. With writing published in the Miami New Times and Remezcla — as well as a short story selected for inclusion in the Acentos Review — he brings a personal, narrative approach to music, design and arts education. Prior to joining YAX, Jorge worked as an on-site literacy tutor at a SFUSD middle school. Email: jorge@youthartexchange.org
