--- Update ---
In November, 2018, we launched the second year of our annual fund-raising campaign with two goals to increase the Endowment Fund of SDPC, which ultimately will support our operating expenses from the income it generates.
Our first goal was to achieve 100% participation: Today, about 30% of SDPC members have contributed.
Our second goal was to raise $25,000 from the membership at large, which the Board would match with donations up to $25,000, for a total goal of $50,000.
As of today, donations have reached $13,520; nevertheless, the Board has pledged $21,925, for a total of $35,445.
We very much thank those of you who have already contributed to our annual fund-raising campaign.
For a variety of reasons, we think that it is very important that each member feels responsible for the sustainability of SDPC and contributes even with the smallest amount possible. We would ask those of you who have not had a chance to contribute prior to the end of 2018, to use the SDPC website Donate menu option and participate our annual campaign. Again, our goal is to close the gap between 30% and 100% of involvement of our members in the annual fund-raising.When we have achieved this,we can confidently approach outside donors with solid evidence that our membership appreciates our organization, making our appeal much more persuasive.
In one month, we will inform everyone through the Newsletter of our progress toward our goal, and then we will call upon any remaining members to discuss the possibility of donating and helping us achieve 100% participation.

The Clinical Work of Wilfred Bion: the ‘Here and Now’ and the Present Unconscious
In a short, iconic and occasionally baffling paper, Wilfred Bion (1967) in ‘Notes on Memory and Desire’ epitomized what contemporary London Kleinian work began to become most well-known for, namely working with the ‘here and now’ states of mind evinced by analytic patients. While Melanie Klein’s work with young children had long been conducted with a focus on the present moment, Bion accelerated this emphasis by a radical revision vis-à-vis the patient’s early remembered history. While he listened to patient’s accounts of their early life, he emphasized more what he could directly observe in the session. Dr. Aguayo maintains that Bion’s emphasis on the present unconscious can be integrated with Freud’s notion of the past unconscious, all of which leads to a multi-dimensional understanding of what our patients tell us.

Life-changing psychoanalytic training / Collegial community: Join SDPC

How Can Psychoanalysis Change Your Life?
Here is what SDPC members say:
"The decision to enter psychoanalytic treatment and training was one of the best I ever made. Thirty years later, the multifaceted world of psychoanalysis remains exceptionally gratifying. I have received invaluable training in developing and maintaining a deepening therapeutic process with a diverse range of patients, enabling me to sustain an emotionally rewarding practice - even in the age of managed care."
"In a larger and relational sense, the psychoanalytic community has been like an extended family for me. A bit like my own small town in which I have made lifelong friends."
"I felt welcomed by each member I met both during classes and events organized by SDPC. A few members worked with me to understand which program would fit me best."

We are delighted to announce that the IPA has launched a new category of awards which serve to recognise the important work of psychoanalysts working within the community. The IPA in the Community Awards will be presented to the most effective projects that support the work of the IPA in the Community macro-areas: IPA in Education, IPA and Humanitarian Organisations, IPA in Health, Violence, Psychoanalysis and Law, and IPA in Culture.
A first prize of US$1,000 and a second prize of US$500 will be awarded to the two best projects within each macro-area, with a special "President's Award" of US$5,000 presented to the overall best project.
We know that many IPA members and candidates are already working outside of the consulting room, helping to expand the reach of psychoanalysis and improving access to people that otherwise may not have access to psychoanalytic treatment. These awards will raise awareness of this important work, and will help our members to connect their projects with others to enhance and promote the interchange of knowledge and experience.
Further information about these new awards, including eligibility criteria and entry guidelines can be found here. Entries can be submitted in English, French, German or Spanish. All proposals must be made using the online application form before the 31st January 2019.
Kind regards,
Virginia Ungar
IPA President
