We are partnering with CitySquare on January 24th for the Point in Time Homeless Headcount. Read what Sherri Randall had to say about her experience last year and use the button below to learn more and register.
My first reaction on seeing the call for assistance for the PIT Homeless Headcount last year was "Wow. That's waaay out of my comfort zone." I soon decided to participate mostly FOR that reason. In addition to supporting the valued work of fellow UU parishioners James & Clint, I think it's an important aspect of spiritual exploration & growth to push one's own boundaries from time to time.
I carpooled to City Square with Kirsten, and we teamed up with James, Clint, Noah (Mercedez), and another City Square staffer named Yolanda. (Young Noah (Mercedez), was impressively adept at spotting people tucked into the nooks & crannies of the darkness.) We were fortunate that it was a dry night, albeit cold. No matter the weather, though, I hope that I'd be able to keep a grateful perspective on *our* stint on the streets being only very temporary. As the Headcount project makes amply clear, there are many who are far less fortunate when it comes to finding shelter from the weather.
The organizers did a great job of prepping us with intro material and a simple script with which to engage with people. We also had various care items (bus passes, warm hats, etc.) that we were able to distribute as needed. None of our encounters were scary, and most were quite amiable. There was, though, one person whom we startled from sleep in a ravine that ran from *us* in apparent terror. His reaction might have been rooted in mental health issues, or perhaps he simply didn't speak English and was unable to understand our attempts to reassure him about our intentions.
I'm glad that I was able to participate in 2018.
- Sherri Randall

The simplest way to explain Roy Zimmerman is to say he sings "Funny songs about Peace & Justice." Add pointed satire and amazing insight into the world around us, and you get a bit closer.
