Garden News


HUGE thanks to everyone who came by to chat, take seeds, share stories and laugh with us at clubs days, we loved every minute of it! If this newsletter is new to you, it will arrive in your mailbox almost every week and contain garden news, garden events and events happening locally, so don't forget to scroll all the way till the end.

This Friday, January 18th we will have yet another fabulous work party. We loved the massive turnout last week and hope that you keep it coming, working in the garden is always better together! This work party will be outdoors at the garden. If it is raining, please meet us at the office in Room B118 in the SUB.

Next week is jam packed...

On Wednesday, January 23rd we will be having our January board meeting. If you want to know more about the inner-workings of the garden, help us with our budget and get involved in upcoming projects come on out! More details below.

On Friday, January 25th, Tim from Hatchet and seed will be giving a FREE workshop on the soil food web. Learn more below.

If you have any ideas for workshop topics, we can help turn them into a reality! Shoot an email to ccgassist@uvic.ca with your ideas and we will do our best.

Volunteer Work Parties

This Week's Friday Work Party: 3:00-5:00pm. 

Worker bee tasks: 
  • wood chip paths (again!)
  • Bed prep for spring planting
  • Weeding along the fence line
  • Creating a seed purchasing list
  • Tidying the plot renter greenhouse
  • Plant!
Volunteers get to bring home a portion of what we harvest on work party days. 
Remember to bring a reusable bag or container to transport your veggies!

The Soil Food Web Workshop
Friday, January 25, 2019, 3pm - 5pm
SUB Upper Lounge Boardroom


Explore the different roles soil organisms play in creating healthy landscapes and learn how to 'grow' and sustain them in the garden. We'll cover how to produce and use high-quality backyard compost, brewing and applying your own compost teas and extracts, how to select and maintain the best equipment and talk about application rates and timing for different crops. Growing Food Anywhere (in containers)

Wednesday, January 23, 2019 from 7:30pm- 10:30 pm
Esquimalt United Church

Chris Hildreth of TOPSOIL started a rooftop container garden business selling veg to local restaurants. His urban farm is now ground level at Dockside Green. He's focused on maximizing yields and shows you how you can also grow lots of food on balconies, backyards, driveways.... even your front steps.!! Any unused space you may have can be turned into a thriving micro garden using containers. :-) For more info, click here.

 

FREE WORKSHOP: Composting Basics

Saturday, February 2, 2019 10 am - 12 pm
Victoria Compost Education Centre

This is an informative session on what it takes to produce an amendment for your garden that is rich in beneficial microorganisms and nutrients! We'll cover the 6 factors for composting success, how to choose the best composting system for your needs and how to increase the rodent resistance of your compost pile. Victoria: Lean Market Gardening with Rockstar Farmer Ben Hartman

Sunday, January 19th, 2019 from 1pm-6pm
Victoria Event Centre

In this workshop, Ben Hartman, author of The Lean Farm and The Lean Farm Guide to Growing Vegetables, will explain powerful concepts from the Japanese lean system that prevent burnout and increase profits with less waste and work. The workshop is geared toward market gardeners, covering lots of production techniques and tips. However, the lean system is universal and the workshop will also explain efficiency techniques that farmers of any size and type can take home and immediately employ. Ben will provide examples of lean at work on Clay Bottom Farm, in northern Indiana, where he and his wife earn a comfortable living from 1/2 acre of cultivated land working less than 35 hours per week. For more info, click here.
