Italian Super Cup: Ronaldo wins Juve silverware

Cristiano Ronaldo's second-half goal secured a record eighth Italian Super Cup victory for Juventus as they beat AC Milan 1-0 in the Saudi Arabian city of Jeddah on Wednesday. The trophy, which was being contested outside of Italy for the 10th time, is traditionally a clash between the Italian league and cup winners, but Milan qualified as Coppa Italia runners-up after Juve clinched the domestic double last season. Striker Gonzalo Higuain was dropped to the Milan bench amid media rumours of an imminent move to Chelsea, with some pre-match reports suggesting he was struggling with a fever. Yet it was Juve's Portuguese talisman Ronaldo who again stole the show with a winning goal that sealed the Turin club's eighth Supercoppa win to make them the competition's most successful team with one more trophy than Milan. FA Cup: Derby turn around two goal deficit with penalty victory

Derby recovered from a two-goal deficit to edge past Southampton 5-3 on penalties in a thrilling FA Cup third-round replay at St Mary's. Two goals in two minutes from Stuart Armstrong and Nathan Redmond had put the hosts on course for victory, after the visitors had earlier had a Craig Bryson goal disallowed by VAR. But Harry Wilson's free-kick sparked a revival before Martyn Waghorn headed a late equaliser for Frank Lampard's side. Redmond missed in the shootout for Southampton, allowing Rams captain Richard Keogh to strike the winning penalty. Derby travel to League One Accrington in the fourth round. (BBC)

Copa del Rey: Real loss and Atletico stopped by Girona

Atletico Madrid 3-3 Girona
Antoine Griezmann’s late goal couldn’t save Atletico Madrid as its defense faltered in a surprising elimination to Girona in the round of 16 of the Copa del Rey on Wednesday. Atletico’s usually stout defense struggled in a 3-3 draw and allowed an 88th-minute equalizer that kept Diego Simeone’s team from reaching the last eight for the first time since the coach took over in 2012. It was the first time Atletico conceded three goals at home since it moved to Wanda Metropolitano Stadium in 2017. Griezmann came off the bench to score an 84th-minute goal that looked set to send Atletico to the quarterfinals, but substitute Seydou Doumbia netted four minutes later and Girona advanced on away goals after a 4-4 aggregate score. The teams drew 1-1 in the first leg last week. Atletico won the Copa for the last time in 2013, and it had made it at least to the last eight every time since then. Girona is in the quarterfinals for the first time.

Leganes 1-0 Real Madrid
Madrid advanced 3-1 on aggregate despite a 1-0 loss at Leganes, which played better and had most of the chances at Butarque Stadium. Madrid goalkeeper Keylor Navas, one of the many second-stringers in the lineup, made several difficult saves to keep the hosts from scoring more goals. The local crowd gave Leganes a standing ovation after the final whistle. It was the team’s first home win ever against Madrid. Leganes had eliminated the Spanish powerhouse in the quarterfinals of last year’s Copa with a win at Santiago Bernabeu Stadium. Newly signed striker Martin Braithwaite scored the game’s lone goal in the 30th. (AP)

Thursday morning transfer talk

  • Carlos Vela has emerged as a January option to fulfill Barcelona's striker shortage, according to several reports. Vela, currently at LAFC, has experience in La Liga, having played at Real Sociedad for seven seasons prior to arriving in MLS in 2018.
  • It seems highly unlikely that Real Madrid would consider letting him go, as he has just been named the best player on the planet, but Corriere dello Sport reports that Inter Milan are hoping to land Luka Modric.
  • With Marko Arnautovic keen to leave West Ham for China this month, the Daily Express carries a story claiming that the Hammers have turned their eyes toward Bournemouth striker Callum Wilson.
  • West Ham have not put all their eggs in one basket, though, with manager Manuel Pellegrini said to be keen to work once again with Roma and ex-Manchester City striker Edin Dzeko.
  • Manchester United are considering letting one of their best young players, Scott McTominay, out on loan if reports are to be believed, and almost all of the Scottish papers agree that Celtic are hopeful of landing the 22-year-old.
