Dalat International School News - Penang, Malaysia
18 January, 2019

As students and parents returned to campus this semester, many will have noticed a number of changes that took place over the semester break. Let me just highlight some of what was done in those few short weeks:
  • New speedbumps and pedestrian walkways for the front parking lot.
  • New pedestrian access gate at the front entrance.
  • Newly renovated second grade classrooms.
  • Continued renovation of the elementary to be able to move preschool over there at the end of the school year.
  • Improvements to Harbor Hall (sound, lighting, curtains, etc.).
  • New fence and motorcycle parking at the front parking lot.
Over the last three years, Dalat was involved in major construction projects with the building of The Castle, The Lighthouse, and The Harbor. Many might assume that we are “done” for a while and not much would happen in the near future. Actually, we continue to move forward with improvements to our campus. Here is some of what we are working on right now:
  • Developing plans for a new cafeteria to be located next to the middle school which will also include a multi-purpose hall, computer labs, and new bathrooms. Our current hope is to start construction in December of this year.
  • Over the next 6-8 months we will be building two new expansive playgrounds. One will be located inside the elementary courtyard while the other will replace the current playground near the preschool.
  • Renovation of the middle school classrooms and building. This will include changing the preschool classrooms into functional rooms for the middle school as well as other changes.
  • Building of a rain covered drop off area for the elementary in the front parking lot.
We are excited for these changes and improvements. Like before, there will be times of inconvenience and frustration for our community. Thank you for your understanding during these times. We will continue to update the community as we move forward with these projects.

Have a great weekend,

Karl Steinkamp
Head of School

Your Annual Fund Gifts are
Already at Work!

Many thanks to those who joyfully supported Dalat’s Annual Fund. Here are a few of the things that your gifts have made possible, all for the benefit of our students. We will continue to share throughout the semester the fruits that have come from the tree of generosity from the Dalat community. Thank you for loving and supporting our students!

With your help, the Music Department was able to purchase many items that help students from every division to learn, practice, and perform at their best. While tuition pays for the basics of our music program, we want our students to have every advantage while they learn and grow.

Wall-sized mirrors in the ES music room help students of all ages to develop and hone their presentation skills. When they can see what they look like when they are performing, they can better understand how to put their “best face forward” for an audience.

These small, simple stringed instruments serve a large and important purpose for our elementary students! Ukeleles are easy to play and help young students begin learning the fundamentals of ensemble music when they play together as a group. This helps students become prepared for band when they get to middle school.

Troop 222 Adds Two New Eagle Scouts - Congratulations to Nathan Chand and David Kilgo

222 부대에 다른 두 이글 스카우트 추가 -Nathan chand와 David Kilgo를 축하해주세요
222群将添加两位新的鹰将- 恭喜 Nathan Chand 和 David Kilgo

Congratulations to Nathan Chand and David Kilgo for their recent achievement of the rank of Eagle Scout! They have both been active in Boy Scout Troop 222 at Dalat International School for over four years. Eagle Scout is the highest rank in the Boy Scouts of America program, and only 7% of all Scouts achieve this accomplishment.

To attain it, Nathan and David exhibited leadership skills in their outdoor skills, merit badges, and service projects, including their final Eagle project, a constructive service project to benefit a community or non-profit organization. Nathan’s project helped a school in India by constructing a medical clinic. David helped a local home for the elderly by constructing cabinets to aid them with food storage and preparation. Great job!
