Interim Murray State Prez Jackson says the Racers have solid internal & external candidates for its open AD chair. A first round of interviews took place "a couple of days ago" as Jackson calls the process "healthy." Also, "I think in the next several weeks there will be a lot more activity." (link)
New Air Force AD Pine officially introduced in Colorado Springs, "This is a tremendous time to build upon the foundation that is already in place within the athletics department. The US Air Force Academy brings in some of our nation's best and brightest student-athletes, and the shared responsibility to develop them into leaders for this nation is the cornerstone to everything I want to achieve here." (link); The Colorado Springs Gazette's Roeder thinks Pine "faces challenges his predecessors lacked," such as raising money, better maintaining discipline in the school's sports teams, eliminating hazing per a report released earlier in the week, improving facilities and boosting attendance. To that end, Pine notes the importance of engaging with the greater community: "We can't fill our football stadium with just the folks we have here on base." (link)
ESPN's Dinich continues to report on potential changes to the College Football Playoff, polled all 10 FBS Commissioners, plus Notre Dame AD Swarbrick, with the American's Aresco & outgoing Sun Belt boss Benson voting in favor of expansion. The other three 'Group of 5' leaders indicate they would need more info on what an expansion could entail. MAC Commish Steinbrecher: "Is it a more valuable championship from a revenue generator in light of all it's going to do to your other things? I think all of us are bullish on the fact that we don't want to do anything to devalue the regular season. Does it make our regular season more valuable, less valuable or no impact? It's not a simple answer. It will affect the entire calendar of college football. I don't think this is a short discussion." More. (link); For the first time we'll have a G5 AD on the CFP Committee as Arkansas State boss Mohajir will become part of the group. Former Texas A&M HC Slocum & highly-decorated military leader & former U.S. Army Chief of Staff Odierno also part of the new wave. Oregon AD Mullens will serve as chair for a second year. (link)
Florida AD Stricklin covers a number of topics, says it's still too early to tell how the federal tax changes have impacted seasons FB ticket holders. Sales for the '19 campaign are up, "we're a couple of months ahead of where we were last season," wants to create a defined student section inside The Swamp as the challenge of student attendance is still under review. Maybe most interesting is Stricklin's belief The Swamp needs to have a capacity of 75K to 80K & moves to get to that range could happen within the next five years. On the UCF FB series back & forth, "I don’t think it was fair for either school the way it came out. It’s just part of it. I’m asked a question and (UCF athletic director) Danny (White) is trying to respond to what I say and it took on a life of its own." More. (link)
Former USC FB AC McNair may get a new trial in his quest to best the NCAA. Los Angeles Superior Court Judge Shaller decides there wasn't enough evidence to support the jury's findings from back in May & Shaller says the foreman of the jury should have been dismissed due to his job as an attorney at a firm that did appellate work for the NCAA "years earlier." The NCAA will appeal. Chief Legal Officer Remy: "This is an extremely disappointing ruling from the trial court judge, who presided over the jury selection, four-week trial and multi-day juror deliberations. There is no basis to disregard the decision the citizens of Los Angeles County reached after careful deliberation. We will appeal this decision and continue to defend the ability of NCAA member schools to both create and enforce its rules." (link)
FB Transfers: Lots of movement & discussion on the wire yesterday, led by Alabama's Hurts moving on to Oklahoma. (link); The Sooners were initially barring exiting QB Kendall from heading to West Virginia, but then reversed field. ESPN's Rittenberg, "Oklahoma eventually made the right decision with Austin Kendall, and it should give notice to all other programs. The era of blocking transfers is essentially over and should be. If schools want to dig in on not paying players, they have to keep giving ground on transfer freedom." (link); There was also some talk of Kansas State limiting grad transfer QB Delton from TCU, but he's now free to make the move. (link); 13 of the top-rated 25 QB student-athletes over the last five recruiting classes have now transferred. (link); Ohio State-to-Miami (FL) signal caller Martell has "lawyered up" as he looks for 2019 eligibility. (link)
The Pac-12 Hotline's Wilner raps with Navigate's Maestas on the Pac-12's long-term media strategy. Maestas: "I cannot think of a sports property or a team, a league that has ever regretted retaining equity in media in some cases. Things like the YES Network with the Yankees and some of these regional sports networks, it's proven to be as valuable as the team itself. I think the YES Network sold for a couple billion and despite making unbelievable profit of the creation of the YES Network, the Yankees are trying to buy it back now. So it's just one example of the value of these rights and control of that media and content and everything it does from advertising and sponsorship to distribution in this direct to consumer world that we're living in now in the value that has over time versus alternative investments. It has grown at double or triple the rate of inflation over the last 20 years. And most people bet that you can do that again." Lots more in the podcast convo. (link); Wilner also goes in on analysis of comments earlier in the week by Arizona State Prez Crow in relation to the Pac-12's current positioning & the leadership of Commish Scott. Wilner notes that Crow has a "personal stake" in the success of Scott, how ASU's institutional model is vastly different than most around the conference & therefore Crow doesn't have the first-hand sensitivity to how others are impacted by less conference cash. Wilner also believes Crow is "doing a disservice" to Scott & his team by saying the Pac-12's TV deals will eventually end up being more profitable than the SEC or Big Ten. (link)
More TV/OTT: Bloomberg's Boudway with a profile of former ESPN Prez & current DAZN lead Skipper as he attempts to build the "Netflix of Sports." It's a good overall read, but here's what you really need to know, "Skipper says DAZN is ready to bid on anything and everything that becomes available in the U.S., including the NFL. He expects that leagues will eventually start carving out exclusive rights packages for online-only bidders." (link); LEAD1's McMillen's latest 'Byte of the Week' is on "ATSC 3.0 or Next Gen TV, the new television transmission standard, could signal a big shift in the way we currently consume media." (link); SBD/SBJ's Ourand & The Athletic's Deitsch both think ABC will find a way back into NFL rights. Pretty big declaration for what will have to be a massive cash outlay & could have ripple impacts. (link); Sinclair has launched a new free on-demand streaming service, STIRR, that includes Stadium. (link)
Add Nevada & its NIAA high school sanctioning body to the list of associations that includes those in Texas & New York that won't host any June hoops recruiting events. However, as reported by ESPN's Borzello, "Nevada high schools will have opportunity to participate in Arizona’s events." (link)
presented by Anthony Travel
Interim Southern Miss AD Mitchell on the freedom he's been granted by university Prez Bennett, "He has given me the keys to the car. I can unlock the doors, sit in the driver’s seat, start the engine and drive. He has given me zero restrictions. He wants me to do the job, and I think there’s a very clear job for me to do right now, which is this analysis, this evaluation of who we are and how we operate." Mitchell's four areas of focus: 1) Positivity; 2) Improve communication throughout the department; 3) All departments to help each other; and, 4) Have a growth mindset. Says he won't accept, "This is how we've always done it." (link)
American AD Walker promotes Senior Assoc. AD Harrington to Deputy AD/COO. Per the AU release, "Since 2008, Harrington has been responsible for the business and financial operations for the athletics department, as well as serving as the sport supervisor for women's soccer. She will now add supervisory and advisory responsibilities with senior staff to her duties." (link)
Interim Michigan State Prez Engler is out. Twenty-three high-ranking MSU leaders, including many deans from around the university, signed a letter to the board on Wednesday night pushing for Engler's exit, "The pattern of comments by interim President Engler, including his most recent statement suggesting that some of the survivors of sexual abuse are 'enjoying' the spotlight, further harms the very people it is our responsibility to support. We do not support his continued leadership." (link)
A run of MBB HC ejections in the AAC included both UConn's Hurley & Tulsa's Haith getting bounced at the same time last night. Not sure I've ever seen that happen before. Hurley: "I don’t know why Frank and I got the first technical. We were nowhere near confrontational with one another. We glared at each other. We were trying to diffuse the situation and shake hands, and got the second technical and were ejected. I don’t feel this was handled correctly and should be looked at by the league." Haith: "It didn’t warrant us both being ejected. Both of us are competitors who were fighting for our teams. Could have been defused." (link - video, link - comments); The Hurley-Haith situation followed a night after Cincinnati's Cronin got run, "...it's a joke, it's not fair to his kids, the referees should be suspended." (link)
Interesting read on the state of Softball at Oregon after former Ducks HC White exited for Texas last off-season & six student-athletes transferred this past Fall. UO AD Mullens on White's $500K offer from the Longhorns, "We said, 'We love what you’ve done, we’d love for you to stay, but we are not in a position to pay outlier salaries.' [...] Sometimes change is difficult and this one has been difficult." The Oregonian's Crepa says even if the Ducks would have matched the Texas offer, word around the sport was UT was willing to go as high as $1M annually. Lots more on cultural changes to the program under new HC & former Oklahoma AC Lombardi who has added more structure off the field, which some student-athletes feel has infringed upon their "individuality." Lombardi's deal is worth $345K per year. (link)
More Leadership Updates: Arkansas-Pine Bluff AD Hines relieves WBB HC Kilbert of his duties. (link); Rising DI UC San Diego AD Edwards hires Women's Soccer AC Jones as the program's new HC. (link); UNC Greensboro boss Record turns to High Point Men's Soccer HC & Spartans alum O'Keefe to return home. (link); Georgia Southern AD Kleinlein tabs Appalachian State Women's Volleyball AHC Willis to the top spot in Statesboro. (link); American Field Hockey HC Jennings extended through the 2023 season. (link)
Kansas State AD Taylor on the inner workings of a new FB staff, "The transition of a football staff is very, very complicated. You've got families moving, you've got them in temporary housing, eventually they're going to get houses of their own, and they're on the road recruiting, so it's a pretty stressful time. I think they do want to get settled into their office, start looking at film of the team we have and start putting their stuff together for next fall, but really this spring is going to be very, very critical." Taylor also notes that deciding on pre-game hoops music is a "very complicated piece," ultimately is a "blend what the players want, what the coaches want and what's important for the fans as well." (link)
Former Ohio State FB HC & new Asst. AD for Athletics Initiatives & Relations Meyer says he wants to expand the 'Real Life Wednesdays' program for Bucks FB to the rest of the department's 36 programs. Meyer: "You name another school in the United States that has as many Fortune 500 companies and internship opportunities. You have every walk of life and anything you want to do here in Columbus, and they’re all Buckeyes. […] We want to have 100 percent career job placement when your career is done at Ohio State." (link)
"SEC football unquestionably is the driver of Mississippi sports betting." Key point in this ESPN piece on the first year of legalized sports gambling at Biloxi's Beau Rivage sports book & bar, plus other new establishments on the Gulf Coast. Also, "Mississippi books finished 2018 up a net $14.8 million, with a solid 10.6 hold percentage (the amount the book keeps or hold of the amount wagered) -- greater than Las Vegas books." More. (link); NBA Deputy Commish/COO Tatum indicates the league is going to "double down" on its policing of players in light of new legalized sports gambling, points to the English Premier League as an example to follow. Tatum: "A lot of it has to do with education with respect to our players, with respect to our teams. We're spending a lot of time learning from the mistakes that were made and what we're seeing in sports betting in places around the world." (link)
Fundraising: $1M more for San Jose State as alum Swanson & his wife give for the new FB Operations Center. (link); Northern Iowa's Panther Scholarship Club did a record $2.4M in 2018. Cash donations surpassed $1.51M. (link); Missouri's Tiger Scholarship Fund launches the #ShowMe1839 campaign in a nod to the year the university opened & in a push to reach 18,039 TSF members, which, if achieved, would be one of the three largest organizations in the SEC. The TSF currently has 7K members. (link)
Facilities: Wisconsin athletics will outsource its complete food and beverage operation, seeks a five-year deal. Current concessionaire is Levy, but daily student-athlete meals and catering events have been done in-house, previously. (link); Check out this photo gallery of Indiana's Wilkinson Hall, which was dedicated yesterday. Will bring Volleyball and Wrestling teams to the athletic facilities "neighborhood" as the 3,000-seat venue is located on the northwest side of campus with the likes of Assembly Hall, Memorial Stadium and others. Alum Jay Wilkinson gave the $10M lead gift. (link); Wake Forest and WF Baptist Health are teaming up to determine root causes and ways to prevent sports injuries, particularly in baseball. Yesterday the school unveiled a state-of-the-art pitching lab as part of the $12M player development center at David F. Couch Ballpark. 16 high-speed cameras and motion-capture technology to record every detail of a throw. (link); Kent State gets new Daktronics centerhung LED Video Boards and a ribbon board at Memorial Athletic and Convocation Center. A custom audio control system was also part of the deal. (link)
Also Noticed: The latest MBB rankings data and comparisons, updated daily. (link); Iowa State will not have a spring FB game. (link); Fanatics and Operation Hat Trick strike a deal. (link); Sonny Vacarro and Gary Charles set to bring back the Big Time event in Las Vegas this summer, replacing the Fab 48. (link); United States District Judge Pitman dismissed the federal lawsuit brought by former Baylor Title IX coordinator Lyons against the school. She asserted a "sexist mindset pervaded the culture" and caused discrimination of female students, but Pitman said she failed to support her facts. Lyons sought $750K from BU for lost wages and mental anguish. (link)
